Apparently, Taft University targeted grads of California Western School of Law and encouraged them to sign up for an online $18,000 MBA. Did not sit well with this blogger. It was marketed to increase employability. Cal Western cost nearly $70,000 per year but only had just over 31% of it's attorneys employed in full time career JD jobs 9mos after grad (at least according to Wikipedia). Outside the Law School Scam: California Western School of Law alum receives a special sales pitch from a school peddling online MBAs to dissatisfied recent law grads.
I'm saddened that Taft thought it was good idea to use a "vulture" tactic. I can't see how they thought this was going to sit well. On another note, it amazes me how many people don't understand a thing about accreditation and what schools are/aren't legitimate. You see people in the comments referring to Taft as "unaccredited" when in fact it actually is accredited by the DEAC and has been for years.
True, although it's amusing that in this case it's the MBA program and not the law program playing the role of ambulance chaser.... Like H.L. Mencken wrote, “Because the plain people are able to speak and understand, and even, in many cases, to read and write, it is assumed that they have ideas in their heads, and an appetite for more. This assumption is a folly.”
I like what one of the commenters said (on blog). The person pointed out the Taft letter had California Western SOL Alumni noted on the side. Of course it was meant to stand for School of Law but considering the huge price tag of the school and 31% employment rate, it probably stood for S--- Out of Luck.
In Virginia, K-12 students take "Standards of Learning" exams. Back when they were in elementary school I had to explain to my kids why I was laughing every time they referred to "SOLs". (Thanks a lot, Virginia!)
That's an especially ironic kick in the grunion, considering that Cal Western offers a J.D./M.B.A. program with a RA school (San Diego State); https://www.cwsl.edu/academics/dual-joint-programs/jd-mba
Two well known graduates of Taft Law School (apparently spun off from University) are Jonathan Falwell and Orly Taitz (attorney for birther movement).
Jonathan Falwell did not take the bar. His brother (head of Liberty University) has a law degree and I believe is a lawyer. Pat Robertson graduated from law school but failed the bar. His son and heir apparent is a licensed attorney. The late Fred Phelps (Westboro Baptist Church) was actually an attorney (not much in the way of theological training). He started life as a Democrat and Civil Rights lawyer. His daughter is an attorney and I believe the one who files suits on behalf of the church. Something about religion and law?
