Modern Technology College is an ACCSCT accredited vocational college, Golden West College is a WASC accredited community college in Orange County, and we are all familiar with Cal Coast.

Claiming an Ed.D. from a California approved university may not be tremendously impressive in formal education circles, but this guy seems to make his living as some kind of fitness trainer and not as a scholar or academic.

I can't comment on his certifications, or about his fitness training work.

All in all, he seems OK to me. Perhaps he's good at what he does, I don't know.

The old boy makes about 2+mil a year.
    Hmmmm!

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that the American Institute of Hypnotherapy is DETC-accredited.

    I admire the guy!

Well' here is someone (I've never heard of him until now, but I'm a Brit) who has, seemingly, been quite 'up front' about what he does and what he has done via gaining qualifications. So, non-RA degree programmes do work for some people, do seem to meet a need and he is a successful person in the field in which he works.

Here is the link for the school -- what do you think? Sounds very questionable to me:

Not RA or DETC, but very honest about it:
    "ACCREDITATION

American Pacific University is accredited by the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS, COLLEGES and UNIVERSITIES, an international accreditation agency based in Antwerp, Belgium.

AMERICAN PACIFIC UNIVERSITY IS NOT ACCREDITED BY (A RECOGNIZED) AN ACCREDITING AGENCY (OR ASSOCIATION) RECOGNIZED BY THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF EDUCATION.

Note: In the United States, many licensing authorities require accredited degrees as the basis for eligibility for licensing. In some cases, accredited colleges may not accept for transfer courses and degrees completed at unaccredited colleges, and some employers may require an accredited degree as a basis for eligibility for employment."

    All emphasis thier's

A lot of celebs have non-accredited doctorates (subject of other discussions on degreeinfo). In my opinion many people in US are used to "30-second sound bites: so when they see a book or course by a doctor they assume it's legit.

For me, it has the opposite effect. If he had no degree, I would have taken him at face value and assumed he was legitimate. Once I hear questionable degrees, I wonder what else is stretched or exaggerated. Are there other achievements that are faked?

Sorry; I was thinking of the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, a different school entirely.

You are exactly right. This person is holding himself out as a health professional to the public and has very questionable credenitals.

I still cannot find where he is licensed (Licensed Radiological Technologist). I looked on the web and pretty much all of the certifications he is claiming to have either do not exist or show no listing for him.

Sorry, but the guy looks like a shill and a sham. I very much doubt the magazines he claims to write for and the TV shows he appears on are aware of his background.

How can this sort of thing be allowed to happen?

You are much more generous than I. With the general lack of understanding about accreditation, almost any statement about it from an unaccredited school is bound to be deceptive. This school's comments leaves one to believe that as long as one doesn't require recognized accreditation for one's job, or one doesn't require federal financial aid, then their unrecognized accreditation should be okay. In fact, unrecognized accreditation has no other function than to deceive, unless that accreditor is very active in pursuing recognition. NAPNSC is the exception to the rule, but only because of their long history. But even listing that accreditation without a FULL disclaimer is deceptive.

This school is telling the truth, but not the whole truth. The whole truth is that their accreditation has absolutely NO academic meaning. As such, it should not be employed.

Rich is exactly right about this issue. What is alarming is that this person is getting away with claiming various credentials that are extremely questionable. And the media falls for this kind of thing?

    Re: Geez

I am not sure where the 2 million figure comes from, but the amount of money he makes does not give validate what he is doing. People go to him because they think he is a health and wellness professional. Looks like a good story for 20/20:)

The guy has an Ed.D. from CCU, not American College of Metaphysical Theology or the University of San Moritz. Why would this be a good story for 20/20?

Gotta agree with Russell--CCU is definitely not a degree mill, so the worst they could say about it is "It's not accredited." Big deal; neither is Bob Jones.

I'm slow, so help me out.

Before we crucify this guy, would somebody please state clearly and succinctly what's the matter with him?

The worst thing on his resume seems to be the certification from the American Institute of Hypnotherapy. This outfit operated until recently in Santa Ana California, and still retains its listing on the CA-approved list.

In its new Hawaiian form as American Pacific University, it smells a little worse, particularly in conjunction with the "professional organization" that its owner runs at:

    http://www.hypnosis.com

But A) Ellis apparently did his certificate from them when it was in California and CA-approved, and B) Ellis doesn't seem to be practicing as a hypnotherapist anyway.

Right now I still agree with Telfax and kind of admire this guy. He has become a success through entrepeneurship, and is apparently providing a valuable service in a business where customer satisfaction and word of mouth count for more than a CV.

    What's the problem?
