There are lots of people on this board with college teaching experience so maybe you can tell me if this is a silly idea. A person might take a job like that in the same way you might take an unpaid internship. It's a piece of experience, a resume item, a teaching reference, etc. Aaaaand, you might even believe in the school's mission.

It's possible to get people to volunteer to do this: that's been PEOI's approach for many years. The problem is that when people are volunteers, however well intended, whatever you need them to do will inevitably be last on their list of priorities. That's okay if you have a deep enough bench, but not recommended if you're relying on one or two people to do things in a timely manner.

    Not silly at all.

Teaching is one of those Catch-22's where everyone wants prior teaching experience, but it's exceedingly difficult to get experience, because almost every school only hires experienced. So, teaching at UotP can be mutually beneficial; the "volunteers" get teaching experience plus a resume entry, and the school gets eager, motivated teachers. The fact that the school is now DEAC-accredited also adds credibility, because you can then state truthfully that you have experience teaching for an accredited school.

If my schedule ever lightens up, I wouldn't mind volunteering to teach, I really like the concept and I think you would have some students with very varied and interesting backgrounds.

I have been a volunteer with University of the People for almost 2 years now. While you do not receive pay, you do receive an honorarium. The class size ranges from 30 to 40 students and are around 9 weeks long.

This depends on the number of students and how long you have volunteered with the university. I will say that things are changing, as the first year with UoP I was not given a tax form as the honorarium was considered to be non taxable income, this year is the first I have received a 1099, due to changes in how volunteers are being handled. I think this is due to the upcoming master degree programs that they hope to implement soon.
