Today I got the official acceptance into the Colorado State PhD program in Mechanical Engineering (Industrial Engineering Option).

Now I got to do it.

When I first got started looking I did not really know the difference between regionally accredited, nationally accredited, state licensed, and the rest.

To be honest what actually got me interested was the Cal Coast program in engineering management. This from reading inflight magazines and discussions with a well respected author who had recently gotten his EdD from their. And a year ago, I was almost ready to apply, thinking that was probably the only choice.

But then I started looking on the Internet and discovered the whole world of DL.

After looking at about 100 different programs both in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia, I narrowed it down to four in this country and two overseas.

The programs are at Indiana State (ISU), Colorado State (CSU), University of Alabama – Huntsville (UAH), University of California – Berkeley (Berkley), the University of Sydney (Sydney), and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Three of these are in construction management (ISU, RMIT and Berkeley), two in engineering management (CSU and UAH), and one (Sydney) is in project management.

I made application to two (ISU and CSU (ruled out Sydney and RMIT on TOTAL cost (mostly airfare))). And today got accepted to CSU.

I wish to thank the Bears, and Head for their excellent (and IMHO unbiased) book (Bear's Guide), which my wife is now perusing. Additionally like I said, above the founders and moderators of this board, and most of the members (a few I reserve judgment on).

Congratulations, Mike! I hope that everything works out for you.

I didn't know much about all of this accreditation and distance learning stuff either until about a year ago. Since then I've finished my bachelor's through TESC, and next week I start my first online courses at Capitol College on my way to an MS in CS, which I hope to complete next summer. The program doesn't officially launch until the Fall, but I'm getting a headstart by taking a couple of electives this summer. :) After that I'd like to do an MBA residentially through UT Austin (evening or weekend program), since I've become convinced of the value of choosing a top 20 business school and I'm lucky enough to have one within commuting distance. I'm hoping that an MS from Capitol will not only boost my technical knowledge and marketability, but will also strengthen my application to the UT Austin MBA program.

Best of luck Mike and good work in first getting a grasp on accreditation.

Glad to see you looked at the accreditation issue and did not make the mistake I did. When the degree is accredited, there is no question about its authenticity.
