I found out about this on another forum. The Carnegie Foundation has classified UT Arlington, University of Houston, University of North Texas, University of Dallas, and Texas Tech University as research universities with very high research activity. UT Austin, Texas A&M, and Rice already had this classification. You can find the sources in the Wikipedia article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Texas I think UTSA, UTEP, Baylor, and Texas State are still striving for Tier 1 status. Texas just might match or surpass California in the number of Tier 1 universities.
Texas has a lot of impressive universities. I think you mean the University of Texas at Dallas instead of the University of Dallas. UDallas is a small Catholic school in Irving w/ about 3000 students. I used to live right near it. Also, SMU and TCU are schools with "higher research activity," which is not too shabby. Overall, it's a state with some outstanding higher ed.
Aside from outstanding higher ed, Texas also leads the way in providing access to that higher ed for veterans. So, definitely some lessons to be learned about Higher Ed from the Lone Star State.
