I was wondering if there is anyone else in the forum who is studying or thinking of studying through UNISA?

That should be me !! UNISA responded after long time and ask me to submit application but I am still hesitating due to uncertainly with university reform and UNISA will also be affected. I cast doubt in their administrative dept as response seems to be too slow. My area of interest is business-related (doctoral program).

Another university in South Africa has assigned me a supervisor while I am being asked to submit application.
    ;) :p

    Doubts and dates

I had some concerns as well and through the SOL at Unisa I vocalised those concerns. I had a response from the Students Union who posted their statement on the merger on their web site.

As well I mentioned this to my advisor who said I would likely have completed my degree by the time the merger took place since it was being taken to the High Court in Pretoria. The earliest it could happen now is 2008. The merger was flawed and the courts have seen that.

My worry was that the name would not be recognized internationally like Unisa's is.

I also wrote to the South African High Commissioner to Canada asking that this merger be avoided or at least the name change. The letter was passed on the the RSA government. Many others wrote to their local RSA diplomats as well.

Since the entire RSA higher education structure is changing and some universities will disappear, there will none left untouched. You can visit the Minister of Education's site from the South Africa government portal to see the final look according to the Minister's plan. RSA government

    Re South African Universities

    Hello there,

I am mid-way in my DEd program at University of Port Elizabeth. I share your general concerns about South African universities. I had wanted to go through UNISA, too, but elected to go to UPE because I was welcomed by an advisor/promoter, and I find dealing with the UPE administration to be acceptable.

In another vein, it is good to meet other South African DEd distance learners.

    Others

    Hello

Great to know there are others out there. Sometimes it seems like there is a gap and one is alone. How do you find the studies through UPE?

What is your topic for dissertation if might ask since we are in similar programmes?

Are you preparing two degrees at a time? Your signature block seems to indicate this but I may have misread it.

    Brad
