I am applying to Grand Canyon University to pursue a Ph.D. in Industrial & Organizational Psychology. I am well aware that the program lacks APA accreditation and it's not intended for licensure. I was a bit concerned about their for-profit status, however since the president announced that they will be actively try to return the school to a non-profit status in 2016, I am optimistic. Question, do you think this is a good dissertation topic for I/O psychology? "Stressed cops: Examining stress in law enforcement organizations and how to control it" Do you have any suggestions? I want to do something related to law enforcement since that's my profession. Thanks!
The devil is in the details. Under which scholarly discipline does this fall? What does the current literature have to say about it? Where is the gap you're going to fill? Which approach--deductive or inductive--will you take? (Are you theory testing or building?) What research question(s) are you trying to answer? Which research methods are appropriate for the topic? If you know these things, then your question about the appropriateness of the topic will be clear, and so will your argument in favor of the approach. And know that the topic you suggest at the outset doesn't have to be the one you ultimately pursue. Another advantage to the "taught" approach!
Aside from all that good stuff Rich mentioned, to me the topic seems too broad. You're going to look at every source of stress in a large organization, across all positions, AND devise solutions for them all? Please excuse me for putting it like this but I DON'T THINK SO.:sad6::heart:
There are significant financial obstacles standing between this institution and non-profit status. If you do not want a degree from a for-profit institution, then enrolling at GCU is risky, presidential statement or no.
One thing that comes up quite often is forensic examiners working with CP, rape or similar. They require constant mental evaluation, and break from the work. You have access to the forensicators and they will be able to provide you ample examples where the associated strain just completely drains them. What makes one be able to empty the bial, instead of going vigilante?
