There are a fair number, but usually called envirpnmental science or mangement these days. Or even Science Education (Earth Science Option). A true Geology course would be an MS degree and I beleive Kansas State has one.
Hmm. Interesting Question... Earth Science, I don't know. BUT, the University of London external program offers a masters in Geography (MSc? MA?). See their web site for rather full details under "postgraduate qualifications." --Orson
Yes (above), and also a few other... "Yes" to the above post. Going through the search engine at graschools.com. selecting “earthscience” and “distance” programs for geology and geography yielded the following (and mind you there were other more technical specialties offered as choices, as well as further details on site like email buttons and phone numbers): Bircham International University Faculty of Science and Technology Geology #312 - 2520 S.W. 22 Street - Suite 2 Miami, FL 33145 U.S.A. OU-UK Not entirely sure but I think the Open University in the Uk offers a program in earth sciences. Take a look at their web site. 'telfax'
Re: Yes (above), and also a few other... Thanks all for the feedback. I also found Prescot College in AZ has an intriguing DL masters in Environmental Studies. Their degrees (both bachelor and masters) are of a self designed nature.
Re: Re: Yes (above), and also a few other... ======== Yes indeed. There are quite of few DL programs in Envrionmental Science--one at ASU--others far and wide--try the site gradschools.com for a complete litsing... --Orson
self-interest/professional What is the interest in the earth science masters? Is it for self-interest? or is it for professional advance? All the best!
Another option... Hmmm Physical geography.. . then I'd do the University of London external Master's... At the other end of prestige but eminently practical is Southwest Texas State University's Masters in Applied Geography, it's especially geared towards training teachers, uses the course unit method, mostly with video taped lessons. Details at their geog. department, also 3 pages in their corresspondence course catalog (available by mail--I sent them an email). --Orson
Dear Ian... I'm somewhat confused. Geography and geology are quite distinct fields; only the earth is in common. And enviro science sits uneasily between the two. SO--for personal interest, are you having trouble deciding between fields? Or have you decide to narrow your search? I noticed that the University of Idaho has a DL masters in Environmental Science with a water quality (?) emphasis.... I'm planning on applying to the Univ of London MSc (ext.) in Environmental Management--it's more broad-based policy oriented than many (or than the "management" tern implies). I'd hoped to do so last fall, but missed the Oct/Nov deadline. (There were others on the board then also applying to do London master's--perhaps I'll dun them....) --Orson
Re: Dear Ian... I agree in general however looking thru college catalogs I see many overlapping geology and physical geography courses - especially in schools that don't offer both degrees. I am finishing up an aviation masters degree, pursuing a PG Field Geology Certificate, and thinking what to do in the fall.
I love education So you will have one masters and want a 2nd in a different field. If you don't plan to work in Earth Science/geology/geography do you need a degree? One of the things that a masters demonstrates is the ability for independent research. If the 2nd masters is for personal insight, maybe you can just map out your own area of study? On the other hand if you think you might shift into that field someday, a masters is a measure of committment to the field. If you might be shifting to that field in 10 to 12 years, you might hold off until closer to the transition date. Writings change in a field and you would want to be up to date. All the best!
