does anybody know of that post from this last year, wherein some young kid asked how to train as a militaryu psychiatrist. All i could tell him that there is no such thing as the occupational title of military psychiatrist, but there are very many psychiatrists in the military. Noe i told hom that thus then and therefore and in conclusion i told him his degree/occupational path was like this: keep up the grasdes in high school, get on the honor rool, if at all possiblew take science classes like biology and chemistry, grasduate with honors, take the ACT/SAT and totally blow the curve, in college double major in chemistry and biology with pre-med curriculum, stay on the dean's list, graduate valedictorian/salutatarein, then take the MCAT, totally ace med school, then get your MD, and do your fiver year internship.residency in psychiatrist, and then get yourself hired to be one of the militaryu shrinks. But i'm here to tell you, there's something els4e: the afterworld, a place where you can always see the sun, so if you call up that shrink in beverly hills, you know the one, dr everything will be allright, maKES EVERRYTHING GO WRONG, GO CRAZY, LET'S GET NUTS, TILL THEY PUT US WITH THE BANANAS TILL THEY PUT US UIN THE TRUCH, GO CRAZY! PUNCH A HIGHER FLLOR! Everybody, let's go nuts. Well i'm here to tell you there's something elae: an MA in Military Psycjology form Adler University. So if anyonr can still find this thrad, give him a threadlijk. I've got to go over to amazon and order about$100 worth of books on women in the civil war south, then go upstairs, pick up a history book, get in my reclining chair to read said history books in that hopes that i might falling asleep while reading said history, it alwaysd worked for King Xerxes in the Book of Esther. G'nite all!@ EDIT AGAIN:P.S.- It is also possible to do your internship/residency with the U.S. military.

Psychology is not the same thing as psychiatry and degrees (or other formalized training) in one doesn't prepare you for the other.

I recall a guy during freshman orientation who proudly proclaimed that he was a psych major because he wanted to be a psychiatrist and figured if he had an undergrad in psych he could skip the whole residency business. When our advisor told him that was absolutely not how it works he stomped off. Last I heard, he switched to marketing or economics or something like that.

MA in Military Psych? Neat. But I fail to see how practical it would be. To be a military psychologist you need to be a licensed psychologist which, generally speaking, means you need a doctorate and an internship. If you want to be a military psychiatrist, you need to be a licensed physician (MD/DO) at a minimum. The military offers residency programs so a recent grad could potentially sign up right after graduation and achieve their goal.

This might be an interesting option for someone already working in psych either in the military or with the military (or, say, veterans at a VA). But it wouldn't be a substitute for the basic job requirements to get in the door.

Yeah, that's right. Psychiatrist = MD, Psychologist = PhD
Psychiatrist prescribes medication, Psychologist does testing
Both can do therapy but Psychiatrists usually don't anymore.

nd so also, by the way, some psychologists, depending on which state they reside in/practice in, can script crazy meds. One jurisdication wherein a psychologist may script crazy meds in the USMilitary. Moust states wherein it is legal for psychologisyts to script meds tend to be way down south in Dixie, though masybe the yanks might someday fall in line with other parts in the country. Usually for a psychologist to script meds, he she has to be a licensed psaychologist, he she has to take an MA MS IN pSYCHOPHARMOLOGY and/or behavioral MEDICINE.

Neuhaus: I still consider you to be a friend, but I have a few things to tell you.

    1. Thanks for clarifying that Psychiatrists equals MD + 5yr residency in Psychiatrist while Psychologists equal PhD/PsyD/EdD IN Psychology + Internship in Psychology. I already knew that, so it's fine.

    2. Psychology and Counseling or Sociology/Social Work or Human Services would be good undergrad degrees for future mental health workers. But such majors are not required, as nowadays any major can get you into the grad program of choice provided you're actually litewrate enough to be able to completely fill out a grad school app.

    3. I am actually fluent enough in the realm of educationa l degrres nomenclatures such as are the fine philosophical hair splitting arguments in re the technically correct distinctions between military psychiatrists and military psychologists, but they are close enough to be useful enough to him in the form of having gained knowledge of lots of technically facts about military mental health services regardless of whether his employers acknowledge his degree or not. Period. Case closed.

    Hi Ted

No luck. Searched all permutations of Adler U., "military psychiatrist" military + psychiatrist etc. etc... Adler U., of course, is named after the pioneering psychotherapist Alfred Adler. We have more numerous posts mentioning Mortimer Adler, philosopher, educator and father of all Great Books programs. I DID find a thread about psychologists prescribing medicines - in limited circumstances. IIRC, Adler = eagle in German. I am linking it only for a five-star, award-winning post from the illustrious St. Levicoff, greeting us from his Rig on High. http://www.degreeinfo.com/nursing-medical-related-degrees/23421-psychologists-prescribe-medicine-2.html

I've pretty well worn out the "Searchazoid." I found an instance of an OP asking where/if he could earn a Ph.D. in Military Science, but zero mention of psychology. Only schools mentioned were AMU and Union Institute. Could the post you're seeking possibly have been on "Degreebeard" (extinct) or another forum?

Yes, I agree. I just tried it and while it wouldn't locate Ted's missing thread (I think we'll need Harry Potter for that!) it did have some answers to the thread's original question about becoming a military psychiatrist. Best I could find. Here are a couple of links, for whatever use they might be.

And Adler U. has a Master's program, majoring in Military Psychology. It's here: MA in Psychology: Specialization in Military Psychology
Not aware of any doctoral programs here in military psychology - or any psychiatric training at all.

I think I've "been all the help I can't be."
