Montana thinks this might solve their doctor shortage For-profit doctor colleges -- boon for Montana or boondoggle? | Economy | bozemandailychronicle.com
The biggest concern seem to be whether Montana can support enough clinical rotation and internship spots for a good portion of the graduates. Of course, the concept of for-profit medical school is not novel. Rocky Vista University College of Ostheopatic Medicine is a for-profit DO school that, by all accounts, is doing rather well. A new for-profit MD school, California Northstate School of Medicine, opened last year. Touro empire (which has, IIRC, 4 med schools, in California, Nevada and two in NY) essentially works as a for-profit system. Of course, medical education being as competitive as it is, a for-profit medical school (even new DO school) would be far from open-admission. The article makes a mild dig at DO schools, but in reality they are all very coveted (even if on average slightly less so than MD schools).
