Is anyone familiar with the "University of Wollongong" in Australia? I am thinking about doing an MEd there by DL only.
Any hands-on experiences? How is the de-facto acceptance of their degrees?
    Comments are appreciated!

Wollongong is an AQF-approved, brick-and-mortar public university; the Good Universities Guide rated it "University of the Year" for 2001, an award it shared with the University of Southern Queensland. I wouldn't expect to see any acceptability problems.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

  4. Actually, Wollongong also won the year before (jointly with Deakin). We should point out that the "University of the Year" title does not imply that the winner is the best university in a general sense. The award has a different focus each year. The focus for 1999-2000 was Productive Partnerships (won by Deakin/Wollongong) and for 2000-2001 was Preparing graduates for an e-world/Developing the e-university (won by Wollongong/USQ). For 2001-2002, the focus was International standing, with the award going to Melbourne.

As posted below it is very well rated. Depending on where you are located it has one of those odd to Western ears names as does the University of Zululand. But to a non North American, Slippery Rock College, University of Saskatchewan, and countless others sound rather strange as well.

    Good luck!

Just remeber that the BEd is a post graduate bachelors out here and may be the 'teaching' degree, but the MEd is definitely NOT a teaching degree.

I gather that some US students do it thinking that it meets the teaching requirement in US.

    Dear Tom Head:

thank you for this very valuable advise. I just checked it out and UoW actually states: "Interested candidates should note that teaching accreditation in the MEd area will depend on subject choice and are advised to discuss their programme with the programme coordinator beforehand... MEd, MA (Hons), PhD and EdD do not lead to teaching qualifications. Instead they are designed for students already qualified in education and working in the area who wish to undertake advanced study and research in education."
