I'm investigating a distance degree program from Madison University -- www.madisonu.com -- they're accredited by the World Association of Universities and Colleges, but that's all I know.

Legitimate institution? Degree mill? Decent reputation the distance learning community?

    All answers appreciated...

Armin - Run, don't walk away from this school. WAUC is a joke. They are even honest enough to say that WAUC isn't listed by any government entity and that you can't use Federal dollars there. Also, they don't list any faculty on their website. Depending on what you're looking for there are lots of legitimate schools around - avoid this one.

    Regards - Andy

    Run - don't WAUC

I like how WAUC is located at the same exact address and suite as Packaging Man! Inc. Something called Allied Trustee Service is in the same office. Busy little 'operation' they got going on there.

  4. These institutions with names that sound almost like those of well-known legitimate universities are irritating. In this case, the legitimate sound-a-like is James Madison University (plus, of course, University of Wisconsin, Madison). A separate thread discusses Trinity C&U (which sounds like the many legitimate Trinity Colleges and Trinity University) and Concordia C&U (whose sound-a-like is Concordia University).

  5. LOL! I looked up the word "trustee" in a dictionary, and I presume this is the relevant definition:
    • "A person who can be relied upon, especially in a prison."

'WAUC' itself is an obvious attempt to parasitize 'WASC', the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which is the regional accreditor responsible for California and Hawaii.

Yes, I agree. Madison has every bit the same reputation as Chadwick. Definitely cut from the same cloth. Both, in my opinion (and yours, apparently), would be poor choices for most sentient beings.

    The true Picture

I have read a lot of discussions on accreditation and posts which try to degrade various educational institutes.

What I do not understand is that why does one not just simply read the details on the site of the US Department of Education. It clearly states that ACCREDITATION IS A VOLUNTARY PROCESS and is not mandatory. It also states that in USA organizations of post secondary eduaction are allowed to operate with independence. Hence as a matter of common understanding, all schools of post-secondary education (not including diploma mills who sell a degree for money) are legal. Certainly schools accredited regionally have more value then non-accredited schools but not having accreditation by one of the six regional accrediting bodies does not make a school illegal. The reason for this is that Accreditation is a voluntary process and is not mandatory.

I am a student of Madison University and I had to complete alot of coursework and spend alot of time and effort in order to obtain my degree. I do not understand why some people simply write off an institute because it it not accredited by one of the six accrediting bodies recognized by the US Department of Education. These bodies are only recognized by the US Department of Education so that students of schools accredited with them can utilize federal funds. The US Department of Education does not state anywhere that any other school, which is not accredited by one of these bodies is not legal and students must not go there.

I hope this will end any further confusion in anyone's mind. Madison University is a great educational institute where students have to put in alot of effort and time to earn their degrees.

Would you mind telling me the names of a few of your professors? A student at a legitimate school would have no reason not to, right? In fact, at the better schools, students are proud to have studied under professors who are leaders in their field. I'm sure there are many of these at Madison, right?

Also, a student who earns a J.D. (law degree) from an ABA accredited law school is eligible to practice in any state. In what states can graduates of Madison's law school practice?

Does everyone qualify for entry into the PhD programs? Even someone without a high school diploma? Sure looks that way from the site. That's great! Doctorates shouldn't just be for smart people or people who have read books and stuff.

And I'm sure that, as a legitimate university, the faculty of Madison publishes extensively in scholarly journals. Would you mind pointing me in the direction of some of those articles?

Also, where can I find copies of the dissertations written by Madison students? They're publiclly available, like those written at accredited schools, right?

Who is the President of Madison? Who are the Deans? It's not on the web site. No legitimate school would keep this information secret right?

One last question. Where, exactly, is Madison located? Why in the world would such a wonderful university make it's location a secret?

Well, I just can't wait to hear all the fantastic details about this wonderful school.

    munibb,

Please tell us about your school.

    Which degree did you earn?

Did you receive any credit for life experience?

How many classes did you have to complete to earn your degree?

Does your employer recognize your degree? Do you work for the Department of Homeland Security?

    Where is Madison University?

In addition to Jeff's very reasonable questions, I have just one.

Can you name one legitimately accredited school that will accept Madison's credits and/or degrees for transfer or for admission to graduate school?

    OK

    A little info.
While browsing through their site I noticed you can call them at a 228 area code.

This is the Biloxi, Mississippi area.

    munibb,

Could you tell me about the Madison campus, apparently, located at beautiful PO Box 6627 in Gulfport?

Does PO Box mean what I think it means? As in "post office"? That doesn't seem quite right -- that you could have an entire university campus in a post office box. But I'm sure that you can explain that...

If I read the website correctly, you get 60 college credits for life experience so you only have to take the core courses.

They are 6 credits each and a 12 credit final paper.

That must be double the work and one wicked final paper eh?

    munibb, am I correct?

    Wooooaa
