Anybody enrolled or applied to this program? Heard it may be tough to get into. You need a Master's Degree or JD and they accept only 20 a year. It's all online and just started couple years ago. Anybody know how tough it is to get accepted or acceptance rate percentage?

    Thanks

Guys on their website they state the following, "Submit three letters of recommendation from current professors, employers, supervisors, or similar people most familiar with your professional experience. Letters of recommendation must be less than one year old". Should I use 3 professors for my MA program for references or do you think I can use a police captain to write one of the letters and 2 professors? No but my guess would be it is significantly over priced. What is the projected cost of the entire program and what do you intend to do with the degree?

Tuition appears to be 990 per credit hour plus fees, etc. Tuition is 59,400. So, program is probably about 65,000 with other expenses.

CJ is not my field. This may well be one of the premier CJ PhD programs in the country and you no sooner graduate from it than you are inundated with offers of professor jobs and directorships.

My question would be, what makes the cost of this program versus other less expensive programs, more attractive? Will you recoup the investment or are you debt free, have deep pockets and this program looks exciting?

Ph.D program at Nova is in the mid $60,000.00 range and depends on how long it takes you to complete. I am not sure if the CJ program requires two residencies per semester or not, but my program from College of Engineering Computing requires heavy residences.

Walden has a PhD in CJ now too.

Nova had been the only online option for a long time. Capella and Walden had CJ doctorates that were sub-tracks of other programs, like human services, public policy or public safety. A while ago Walden upgraded their CJ track and it now offers a standard PhD in Criminal Justice with several several tracks. It's not inexpensive, but I don't think it costs as much as Nova, nor is it competitive. Walden and Nova are the only US PhD programs as far as I can tell.

I'm about a third of the way through the Walden program and have really enjoyed it. I feel confident that I can make good use of the degree when I retire from police work in a few years. CJ degrees are popular at both vocational and academic colleges, so it's easier to find work, especially if you've worked in criminal justice.

Kim, although not the Nova Southeastern PhD program; however, these CJ doctorate programs maybe of some alternative interest:

University of the Rockies: PsyD in Criminology and Justice Studies

“All students enrolled in a, non-licensure doctorate degree program will be required to attend three In-Residence Workshops.”

    Friday: 1:00 – 8:00pm
    Saturday: 9:00am – 5:00pm
    Sunday: 9:00am – 12:00pm

University of Leicester: DL PhD in Criminology
Criminology Distance Learning PhD — University of Leicester

University of Portsmouth: DCrimJ (Professional Doctorate in Criminal Justice)

“The professional doctorate comprises a structured four-year programme with a taught element delivered through a small number of workshops in Portsmouth for the first two years and then two years of supervised research leading to a thesis.”

“It is accepted that for most professionals it will not be possible to attend all of the workshops so we also use an online learning environment to make best use of technology to keep in touch.”
