When I first joined DegreeInfo under another posting name, actually it was back in the AED days, one of the ongoing debates in those days was the legitimacy of California approved (BPPVE) schools/degrees. Some posters were very positive regarding such schools, others railed against them calling them blatant degree/diploma mills.

I was thinking today about two of the schools most often discussed on the forum--California Coast University and SCUPS (now California Southern University). Out of curiosity I visited the website of each school, both of which continue to focus on distance learning programs. CCU has gone on to obtain DEAC accreditation and SCUPS has obtained both DEAC and WASC accreditation.

Much has changed since the AED days.

Amazingly, AED is still there. Looks like it is getting about one or two posts a week -- many of them religious, some with fake degrees and passports, and the occasional sincere person asking a question that really belongs here.

Are there any legitimate unaccredited schools left in the vein of Columbia Pacific and the old California Coast?

Yes, but not many. And it's difficult to tell since California approval is almost meaningless. There are schools that get re-approved by BPPE without site visits. Just re-submit the paperwork.

Currently, California-approved schools are facing being forced to get accredited--the state wants out of approving unaccredited schools. This is going to cause many of them to close or move. (Some, which appear to be nothing more than operations servicing overseas customers wanting what looks like a degree from the U.S., will like just move somewhere else.) But with all such things, it is subject to future politics and, if enacted, enforcement. We'll see.

(I've been doing some pro bono work for a school facing this situation.)
