    TEKMAN Semper Fi!

I have no idea why most of schools do not offer Distance Learning Doctorate/professional Doctorate in STEM fields. There are plenty of Doctorate in Occupational Therapy via distance learning. There are plenty of this program, nursing, and educations.

Pure "STEM" would be generally practiced in a Academic setting so a traditional on-the-ground PhD is the way to go.

Based on my experience in IT a Doctorate generally offers little professional utility. I know of others who have Doctoral degrees but for the most part it is rarely discussed or even used with one's name. Lots of folks a my company have Doctorates but virtually no one displays a "Dr." or "PhD" tag with their name, so I follow that practice. One thing that is very publicly displayed are patents. We have some staff with 50-60 patents to their name.

In the fields you mentioned, especially Education, Doctorates represent a career progression and are linked to pay increases. So there is stronger market there for potential students.
