Since LaSalle/Orion announced its impending closing, I've checked their site occasionally to see if there was any further news. Today, http://www.distance.edu yielded only: "Forbidden: you don't have permission to access / on this server." Is it possible that only current students are allowed, or might something else be going on?

See John.....you settled for that Ph.D. from Michigan State, when you should have done the LaSalle degree while you had the opportunity and now look...........it's too late. Tsk...Tsk

John - It's likely that they have sold the domain, along with any other assets they have as part of their closing down operations. Some might consider their domain name to be quite valuable as evidenced by the many domains Jones and other schools use to .

Just a thought on the topic.

  4. I don't think distance.edu will prove very valuable. The rule for new registrations in the .edu TLD is that each RA institution is allowed only ONE domain name (in the .edu TLD). So Jones International (for example) would be unable to register distance.edu if they wanted to retain jonesinternational.edu. There are many institutions that currently have multiple .edu domain names, but I believe that these are all "grandfathered" registrations.

This is my understanding of the situation -- I may be wrong...

Hi Gert - My understanding of the rules, at least their intent, is the same as yours. However, the oversight is woefully inadequate, and changing registration and payment for the existing domains is being handled through a myriad of providers (hence the competitive rates for domain registration) so my guess is that anyone who buys it will be able to keep it.

It will be interesting to follow that's for sure! I can imagine for example, that someone like St. John's who currently has a .com extension would be willing to pay a lot to acquire a .edu since it is for some people an indication that they are dealing with a real institution...

  6. A question concerning dot edu

Who basically runs the registration process?? I notice no info on the Better-whois search engine concerning the edu designator for registering a school. How can a "less-than-wonderful" school secure such a registration since they are supposed to be accredited. Or did I read Gert's post wrong?? But then again accredited by who is another story.

    Regards,

    Dick

Educause now controls the .edu domain. The grandfathering in of such stellar institutions  as Trinity C&U has pretty much defeated the potential that existed for having the domain be a reliable indicator of legitimacy, as it is with the British ac.uk extension.

  8. The registrar for edu domain is Educause. The new rules are summarized here. These new rules came into effect last year. All edu domain names registered before the new rules came into effect were "grandfathered" (even if the registrant is a diploma mill). The new rules require regional accreditation.

Just one comment - I read some time ago that there was some action being taken regarding the exclusion of non regional accredited schools. If memory serves, and that is a crapshoot these days *g*, the action was being taken by a group of national accreditors.

No word on any outcome, and this is not intended to begin a discussion on whether or not the rules should be changed. My bias is clear. As a DETC accredited graduate school I would take great exception to not being allowed to have a .edu extension. Fortunately, I fought that battle and won in the first go around...

I was thinking more along the lines of degrees.edu or getadegree.edu...
