because of "distance learning" Foreign students denied work permits over ‘distance learning’ | Toronto Star In a peripherally related story, study permits are not required for DL in Canada unless . . . http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/Distance-learning-doesn-t-require-a-study-permit_19153774
Even the United Stated does not offer student visa for Distance Leaner, this made a Doctorate student at Capella University to get business visa attending her residency from Doha, Qatar.
UMT is approved to sponsor students for a J-1 Visa which I believe requires a student or work exchange (i.e. an international student comes to the US and a US student goes elsewhere) which I imagine they work with because they also run UMT-Hong Kong. It's interesting to see how different schools tackle the challenge of international students and the need (or at least, the demand) for visas.
J1 is a visa for "international visitors" participating in "programs" ran by pre-approved sponsors. This includes specific categories like Au-Pair, camp councillors, scientific researchers - and also college/university students. I had my status changed from F1 International Student to J1 while in grad school at Florida State University. I believe for students, someone else (not you or a relative) must pay your way - I was on teaching assistantship. I didn't know private for-profits can run this program. Also, on F1, you must run a full course load with at most 1 class online - I assumed same is true for J1 but I'm not sure. I'm not surprised Canada tightens screws on the WP program for students. Being hard on "bogus, illegitimate, Canadian generosity-abusing foreign criminals" is so in character for this Conservative government. Take your guess whether I'm leaning their way in upcoming general elections.
Thanks for the clarification. I've always been somewhat interested in visas but I don't get to deal with them regularly. It's a somewhat confusing venture trying to sift through the USCIS website.
