    Colleagues,

I was speaking to my wife about these two different programs, and telling her that I like both for my potential doctoral degree:

University of the Cumberlands (EdD/PhD in Leadership) vs. USC (EdD in Organizational Change and Leadership). Link: Doctor of Education (Ed.D) Program | USC Rossier Online

First, I know that both are online and they are polar opposites when it comes to price. However, I love the way that USC's platform looks and it's nice to have a big name school as an option to finish your doctorate degree.

Knowing that there are some obvious differences, I want to know what your perception and feedback is on these two programs. Steve and Matt, I know you guys are at UC so you have a lot more experience with that side, but I am wondering if you both can view UCS's site and video and tell me how much different it is compared to the interactive UC experience? From my perspective it looks kinda like the Brady Bunch on educational steroids. Haha, but I guess that's what I like about it.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward everyone's perspective. This is why this forum is so valuable, because it allows others to see programs from different lenses.

It is a tough call because you live in Southern California. Therefore, USC best fit; but the price tag is killing your bank account. Does your employer reimburse anything?

TEKMAN, I work for a major Christian university in this region, so they provide me free benefits to get a master's degree (a little too late since I'm almost done at SNHU), but I know that a doctoral degree would be a nice addition. For this reason, I know that Cumberlands would be nicely accepted at my institution (not that it would not be elsewhere, too).

I know that the price tag for UCS is a barrier for me, but I figure the UCS degree would be a nice name on my Resume / CV. I have some time to think about it, since I won't be entering this program until next year, after I graduate in May. Thanks again.

Our courses at Cumberlands do not require us to supply video, only our instructors do. We do all contribute through microphones, so it's still possible to get that classroom back and forth. Just from their site it's tough to know what the other differences really are, particularly the important ones like whether faculty members are friendly and responsive, advisors are helpful, etc. For what it's worth, this is the RMP entry for the director of the program at Cumberlands, you could consider comparing it with those of faculty members in the USC program to get a rough sense.

Ultimately, only you can decide whether the USC name is worth the extra fifty thousand bucks. All I can say is that I'm very happy with Cumberlands, and I think most of my classmates are too.
