  1. The College of the Humanities and Sciences "is an independent, nonsectarian, great books distance learning college" that has applied to DETC for accreditation. This institution has an unusual focus for a for-profit. It offers Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's degrees focusing on "517 complete works by 130 world famous authors in imaginative literature, natural science, philosophy and religion, and social science."

Does anybody know anything about this school?

(My apologies if this has already been discussed -- the name is so generic that a search brought up too many previous threads for me to review them all.)

Their web site states that their "Master of Arts in Humanities" degree program costs $7,700. It may (or may not) be a great program but it's hard to understand why someone would choose it over the program offered at CalStateU-Dominguez Hills (with virtually identical concentration options) which is not only RA but is almost half the cost.
Still, good luck to them in their accreditation quest.

I don't know anything about them specifically, but I've wanted to see a Great Books curriculum adapted to distance learning ever since a student at St. John's (I think that was the name of the school) gave me a firsthand account of what such a program was like. Fascinating stuff. I wish them the best of luck, but I agree that they'd have much better luck if they didn't charge so much.

    Cheers,

  4. At the same street address (1105 East Broadway, Tempe) is the Humanities and Sciences Academy, which prepares "mature high school students in humanities and sciences for post secondary education, social responsibility, employability and life long learning."

The College of the Humanities and Sciences: strengths - all one-on-one instruction, students at the college, with the guidance of an istructional team, design their own program of study. Quite a concept, well worth the price, and they offer an interest free payment plan!

By any chance, Kathleen, do you work for the school?

Steve King asks: "By any chance, Kathleen, do you work for the school?"

John: Well, their website (chumsci.edu) does list a person named Kathleen as one of the six administrators.

But Kathleen's posting here said of the school that "they offer interest-free loans..." and surely an ethical person who worked for the school itself would have said "we."

    Hi Kathleen,

If indeed you are an employee, apologize now and all will be forgiven :D . You could likely add some new insite about DL that everyone would appreciate, even those who have "questioned" the ethics behind your post.

    Tony

BTW You are lucky to be questioned in such a gentle way, most here do not appreciate self serving posts, it may remind them of a spam phenomena on another dl site. Anyway, all is forgiven. ;)

Like Tom, I find the idea of a Great Books curriculum to be very cool. I have always been a great fan of St. John's, and I wish very much that they offered distance education programs. If this new College of the Humanities and Sciences can put out a DL program modeled on that of St. John's, I will be a fan.

BTW, Tom: Have you seen St. John's Santa Fe campus' new MA in Eastern Classics? St. John's has always been a bastion of the Western tradition, well now they give you the option of veering off in an Eastern direction too. This program has a great reading list, plus classes in either Sanskrit or classical Chinese. (I saw an ad for it in 'Tricycle'.)

Unfortunately, it isn't DL. But I like it and wish that somebody would translate it into a DL format.
