    Ladies and gentlemen,

Announcing the arrival of Australia's newest university - International University of America.

To quote from their website, 'International University of America (IUA) in London, was originally founded and incorporated as a university in the State of California, USA in 1980 and now domiciled in Norfolk Island, Australia. Today, IUA brings international students and faculty together in an effort to investigate American-style international business management in Britain. IUA in London is an independent, coeducational, business and liberal arts international institution of higher learning. Its sister institution is the Management Education Resource Centre (MERC) that was incorporated in England and Wales in 1995. Our mission is to provide our students, through academic coursework and internships, a strong foundation of knowledge and experience with which to further their careers in international business'.

IAU is currently listed in Bears Guide under 'Miscellaneous Schools', describing an expose in a French newspaper suggesting that French graduates had difficulties in finding jobs. The San Francisco address and telephone number have not been in use since 1998.

So, the questions to be asked -

Where did this university come from?
Is it connected to Greenwich University, Norfolk Island?
Has another Act of Parliament been passed on Norfolk Island to enact it operations?

    Cheers,

    George

I've been attempting to find references on the Internet to this institution's faculty. It is highly unusual for anyone in academia with a PhD to escape a search engine.

Nothing shows for Luke Maughan-Pawsey, Tatah Anenonyah, Zimran Bhadir and Nigel Burrell. Stephen Helps turns up with connection with unaccredited Huron University.

Does anyone find it odd that out of 20 listed faculty, only 4 hold Ph.D.s (schools or origin not mentioned). There are smatterings of other terminal degrees (along with some combinations of initials that I must admit I am not familiar with).

Things that make you say "...hummm".

The one teaches Accounting with the qualification of ACCA (i.e. Chartered Certified Accountant, UK) and I can find the name of such person in the ACCA Directory of Membership.

I got curious and emailed John Walsh of Brannagh, who told me that there was absolutely no connection between IUA and Greenwich (and since what he had to say about IUA was not favorable--I would repeat it here, but I don't know if it was supposed to be public--I'm inclined to believe him). He sent an official statement and asked me to post it, but I haven't figured out how to open it yet (it seems to be in some sort of Windows-native format). When I can figure out how to open the file, I'll try to forward it along.

    Cheers,

The official Greenwich response to IAU follows. I think the itch that Peter French is trying to scratch is that the dreadful Warnborough University, which had an affiliation with Greenwich in the past (terminated by Greenwich) is run by Julian Ng for its Australian-based owners, the Tempest-Moggs, and this new wonder, IAU, is registered to Peter Ng. Now Ng is a common Vietnamese name, so there may be a lot of coincidence going on here.

I cannot imagine that the people of Greenwich would be naive or stupid enough to affiliate with something like IAU, so I'm quite willing to accept their announcement as written. But it is also hard to imagine why Peter Ng, whoever he might be, would think he could get away with making such claims for more than about nine minutes. What can be going on here?

    Greenwich's announcement as follows:

    GREENWICH UNIVERSITY

    TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

It has been brought to our attention that an organization called the International University of America is advertising itself on the Internet claiming that it is domiciled on Norfolk Island and that it is in some way associated with Greenwich University. Both statements are false.

There is no International University of America on Norfolk Island. There is only one university on Norfolk Island and that is Greenwich University, established as an accredited university pursuant to the Greenwich University Act 1998. The International University of America has no connection with Greenwich University nor is any connection or affiliation under discussion. We are disturbed by this blatantly false description given to this IUA entity and have formally put in an advice to the Norfolk Island Government seeking action at a governmental level.

We have been unable to ascertain where this IUA has its website based. It is certainly not on Norfolk Island. Any information we can be given will be greatly appreciated.

    1. I wonder if anyone in London could drop by their campus and check it out. IUA states in their website:
    "THE CAMPUS
The International University of America is located in the heart of the City of London's financial district, the centre of the city's leading businesses, and one block from Fleet Street with all convenient local amenities. " Are they really there?
    2. Tempest-Mogg gives us one wonder after the other - Warnborough College. Warnborough University, International University of America, and, when Warnborough had to leave the beautiful and academic city of Oxford, and could no longer claim presence there, he started "Cambridge College of Business & Technology " http://www.ccbt.co.uk/home.htm. I love those names - Oxford, then Cambridge...

To find the first website use www.google.com and enter "temple chambers temple avenue". The initial search shows the address used by the university but clicking ohn the website brings an Orpington, Kent, address for the company that does the incorporating.

Note also that the URL (ending in .ac) is for Ascension Island, carefully chosen to cause confusion with the British educational URLs ending in .ac.uk.

I can not understand how they can be left untouched misleading potential students by claiming that they have a campus which is a business bureau address of an incorporating company. Is this not illegal? I wonder if there is a law defining what a university campus actually is and outlining its legally acceptable use? Anybody knows?

Give Preston a prize for misleading. They do not directly say that they are accredited but talk of:

"... pursuing ADDITIONAL accreditation through a United States department of education - recognized accrediting body."

    One wonders "additional" to what?

Where does this woman physically reside? When Greenwich "moved" from Hilo to Norfolk Island, how many of its administrators and staff accompanied it across the sea? How many live and work on Norfolk Island today?

    Does that matter?

She is/was [?] the other half of John Walsh and is porbably in NI - but does it matter who is where? Is the quality in the physical presence or the work produced? Why can't the faculty be scattered anywhere/everywhere?

My sentiments precisely Peter. I am in no way defending Greenwich, what occured, what didn't and the furore that still abounds re-its existence on NI. My interest surrounds the virtue's/disadvantages of the the 'virtual' university. Can it provide the same services for post-graduate studies as the traditional bricks-and-mortar university? And, what makes it so inferior to the less-than-nimble, traditional university???

    Let the discourse begin!!!

    Cheers,

    George

    it's late in the day...

    From http://www.merc-iua.ac/About%20Page.htm
Students who are not yet accustomed to the fire of London's excellent Indian cuisines will be reassured by the description of the facilities.
