    Hello,

I'm looking at a MSc in Health & Safety Management from the University of Leicester (UK) The Scarman Centre.

I'm a member of IOSH (UK) MIOSH-RSP and The Royal Society of Health (UK) FRSH. I hold a BS and MBA both from the U.S.

I'm wanting to know if anyone knows about Leicester U as it relates to going through the degree process at this UK school.

Any hidden traps / problems / issues ?????

    Thanks for your help;)

The University of Leicester is a highly rated British university that offers a range of distance learning programmes in addition t0o the more usual campus-based courses, especially in the field of law, education and labour studies/human resource management. It is a good research-led university. The Scarman Centre is name after Lord Scarman, one of Britain's most senior Law Lords in the past decade or so and (I think) was Master of the Rolls (not Royce!) and may have served as Lord Chief Justice at one time (may not be quite right with this one). However, the Scarman Centre is very highly regarded in the legal profession, as was Lord Scarman before he died at a very old age.

I was a guest lecturer there for a couple of weeks in the MSc in healthcare risk management. Of note, I believe this may be the only remaining Master's program in healthcare risk management in the world, given the demise of the programs at the Field University of Health Sciences in Chicago and Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.

That program is also through the Scarman centre. In talking with the students, all of whom were from the National Health throughout Great Britain, Leicester seems to be held in quite high repute.

Illustrating the principle that free advice can be worth exactly what you pay for it, a google search notes that both University College of London and Loughborough University in the United Kingdom also offer Master's programs in healthcare risk management.

Gracious, the UK can support at least three Master's programs in healthcare risk management while all of the USA programs died due to low census? Interesting, and I would have thought the exact opposite due to the relative numbers of malpractice claims in the USA vs. the UK.

More likely scenerio is that that is the reason for lower claims in the UK.

My colleagues and I represented Leicester's MSc in training and in human resources in the US for five years (1993-98), during which time I was extremely impressed by both the academic and the human aspects of the program. Faculty were friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely accessible, both at a distance and via their twice-a-year world tours, visiting students in many countries. Had we not sold our business to Pearson in 1998, we would have continued our on-going discussions with Scarman and two other distance MSc programs, with a mind to representing them as well.

    Fine place.

PS: I believe their first, or one of their first, earned Master's degrees was to C. P. Snow.

PS2: And, perhaps never mentioned on this forum, there is another innovative DL pioneer in the same vicinity, DeMontfort University in Leicester.

PS3: It regularly surprised me how many people, even in the UK, pronounced "Leicester" incorrectly.

There once was a man named Sylveicester
Who enrolled for his Master's at Leicester
    He was caught in flagrante
With the dean's dear old auntie,
And kicked out in his second semeicester
