What a nice story. Thank you, Mintaru.

I have written about the time I got a letter from a man who said he had been thrown out of the Columbia PhD program in 1913, and wondered if there was anywhere he could complete his doctorate. I mentioned his 'amusing typo' -- 1913 -- and he replied that it was correct. He was now 96 years old, his wife of 70+ years had died, and he was bored to tears. I approached Columbia on his behalf, but they sneered. But Union Institute took him on, and he completed his PhD in three years, at 99. The reason Columbia threw him out: he insisted on doing his doctoral research on the near-certainty (he felt) of an imminent world war, and they said that was so dumb, no one there would work with him.
