The comments on the article are also interesting. I think people are treating this list as something it is not. This isn't a list of accreditation probation. These institutions are not under a show cause order. USDOE is scrutinizing their finances. That's certainly not good. But, as the article notes, the most common reason is that paperwork was filed late. I highly doubt we're going to see the New York Theological Seminary (on the list) shutting its doors because of this. Honestly, I think this is just another attempt at a smear piece against for-profit schools. There are many for-profit schools on the list. There are also a number of public and non-profit schools. Very few of them are under the more serious level 2 scrutiny. This strikes me as not being that big of a deal. Forms were likely filed late. Now they have additional filing requirements. Once things check out the heightened scrutiny will be set aside. Without sensationalist articles (and an administration that is unfairly targeting for-profit schools) this would have been a spreadsheet on some mid-level bureaucrat's desktop and nothing more, IMHO.
