I am seeking for my wife an online (and only online) Intro to Counseling course at the undergraduate level. I am specifically looking for recommendations from people who have actually taken the course in question. I own Bears' Guide and, thankfully, I know how to read.

What I would truly like is first-hand information (and not a list of the 47 schools that have such a course). I'd also prefer cheap! It can be either at a 2-year or 4-year institution.

    Thanks for the help!

Hi Tom - I'm glad those classes have been paying off ;)
I may be wrong but I don't think you're going to find an Intro to Counseling course on an undergraduate level. Relevant undergrad courses tend to come out of Psychology departments and usually don't focus on "counseling" until you get to grad school. Most people (I think) would say that taking counseling courses without the foundation psych courses would be a mistake. Perhaps the closest you'll get on an undergrad level is "Abnormal Psychology" which is about a whole range of psychological problems but not about how to intervene with these problems (which is the counseling part). The closest I got during my undergrad years was to read some Freud, Kohut and Ornstein. Sorry, I know it's not what you were looking for. Maybe someone else knows better. Good luck,
    Jack

It figures that "Introduction to Counseling" would be one of the credit courses that I actually took on-campus.

I started to recommend Penn State's CN ED 403, because their creative writing course was so great, but I see that the blooming thing runs to $1,061--a significant increase over the $150 or so I paid for CW050 a few years ago. Yuck.

Plan B: My brother took some correspondence courses through Mississippi State, which offers an introduction to counseling course for about $275 (at least some schools haven't raised their tuition by 800%). Never took it myself, but State's correspondence program was pretty darned good when I was looking at it--came with its own envelopes and everything. Dunno how good the online program is, but they're Mississippi's leader in distance education. Not that they have much competition.

Plan C: The University of Southern Queensland. It's cheap, and they do have a good reputation when it comes to online learning.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

There are some. In fact, my local community college offers an acceptable course, but not online. My wife needs it as a prerequisite for an MA in School Psychology/Pupil Personnel Services Credential program that she will be starting next year. She's finished all of the other pre-reqs (that's what you get when you get a BA in history  ) and just has to take a course, any course, with that title (or a rough approximation). Given our life circumstances, it would be much easier to take the course online.

Good Morning, TESC has a course description in their portfolio assessment credit bank for the needed course PSY 331. If your wife has some background in this field or experience that can be applied in any way I'd take this route. Have a great day. Hille

In this case I'm glad to be wrong. Good luck,

You probably considered this already, but would they accept the DANTES Fundamentals of Counseling in place of an actual course? That would seem to be the least expensive way to do this.

    Hi Tom,
Not sure what numbers Taylor requires to offer a course. I recently completed the paperwork for professor status there and would be happy to work with you on getting the course completed for your wife. I completed the Professional Counseling PhD at Capella, am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have a private counseling practice. Let me know if I may be of assistance. [email protected]

Unfortunately, no. That was my first question. Although the program is somewhat nontraditional in terms of scheduling (somewhat a la UOP or National University), they do require an in-seat counseling course.

Thank you for the kind offer, Howard. I'm going to turn all this information over to my wife and see what she thinks (since she's the one that actually has to take the course!).

Thanks, Kristin! I found those as well. I was hoping for more first-hand knowledge of a course, but it appears to not exist here. Ahh, well. Any of those courses would likely do the trick.

Athabasca offers an introductory counselling course--PSYC 388: Introduction to Counselling. You (or your wife) can read about it at: http://www.athabascau.ca/html/syllabi/psyc/psyc388.htm.

The fee for the course is approximately $ 474 US ($ 726 CDN, converted at rate of $1 CAD = $0.652529 USD), inclusive of all texts and course materials.

The thread you've dug up is 9 years old and, sadly, Tom doesn't visit us as often as he did back then. Maybe some of our other members can make suggestions.
