  2. The domain is registered to Angel Fernandez, Vullablanca Fernandez, 33707 Luarca, Asturias ES.

Whoever designed the website loves Flash with sound effects. If you don't want to sit through the opening animation, you can see the English language info at http://www.iauniversity.net/maine.htm

If you click on "IAU Fact Sheet" you get a new window of info about IAU ... but it has "American University of Asturias" in the title. That's odd.

    Dear Kristin Evenson Hirst:

Loking at the IAU website - member universities - I can see that the "American University of Asturias" is a member.

There was an "American University of Asturias" in Spain (Asturias) of which Dr Fernandez was the president. I thought this university was discontinued, though?

I would really appreciate more comments on the IAU from all of you of this very fine forum, who are more enlightened in DL issues than me. In other words: Is the IAU a sound university?

Following your link to the facts sheet, I just read that they have a "student body of 175.000 and about 350 tutors". Wow!

There is something mildly amusing about a great international university with many tens of thousands of students, at which the answering machine says there is no one available to take a call at 10 am on a Thursday morning. Didn't even bother to use the classic, "All of our admissions counselors are currently talking to other students" line.

    Dear Dr. Bear:

I see what you mean, but they do state that they have:

    a. accreditation
    b. recognition
    c. several campuses with accommodation
    d. a huge student body
    e. a huge amount of tutors
    f. affiliations with so many universities
    g. registered in Washington D.C. (and not for example in some small remote tropical beautiful isolated island)
    h. proper study programmes

    - can they state this if it would not be true? As for my part, I just can't figure this university out. However, I would really like to know what the experts think. Not that I am thinking about enrolling there, I am just curious.

  8. Wow. There's a web site that just cries out "DIPLOMA MILL".

    What were they thinking?

    Dear Gert Potgieter:

but would Washington D.C. allow a not properly functioning university to register and continue to operate for many years (apparently since 1978, as stated in IAU's website - salute!)

And how about their recognitions: New York State Department of Education, the United Nations and the United States Association of the United Nations? Well, salute again!

    Adelheid:
The institution is BOGUS - either you don't want to admit this or you are trying to justify the institution. Several people have told you that this institution is a degree mill - still in doubt, check with CHEA authorized accreditators and see if either (TRACS, DETC, or RA) lists the institution. If so, mea culpa, if not - admit the institution is WORTHLESS!!!!!!!!

    Wheww :p

    Hey Kristin!

Here is site that makes TUI's look wonderful. Also a contender for the Mystery Meat contest. If P.T. Barnum was still alive I wouldlook for his name attached somewhere. It is even hokeyer (sp?) than that Independent Study School of Law site.

    Wheww :p

  12. IAU claims to be a registered 501(c)3 agency. But the only Inter American University I could find with a 501(c)3 agency code is Inter American University of Puerto Rico (Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico) -- accredited by Middle States.

    Dear Howard:

"salute" was actually meant ironically. I do NOT justify the IAU, and I am NOT on their side - I just do not understand the US laws.

If you call them a diploma mill, that's fair enough, but I still do not understand how they can write all these gorgeous things in their website and Washington D.C. allowing this. Like I said, I am just curious, and Dr. Bear wrote in his 14th edition about the "American University of Asturias" (the same president as IAU - Dr. Fernandez): "Apparently a serious attempt to create an American-style semi-residential university" (p. 246). On p. 328 he had a big question mark about the IAU, though.

So after all I was just wondering. Maybe all those flash and sound gimmicks in their website got into my small brain cells.

    Dear Gert Potgieter:

maybe they are registered under a different name? IAU website quote from "on-campus":

    "Brief History
The roots of the I.A.U. date back to 1935, with the establishment and beginning of classes at the Washington Institute, which provided for the training of high school graduates in E.F.L. and college General Education Requirements. However, the seeds for the normal school's creation were sown five years later, when the Board of Directors decided to create the InterAmerican College.

The college expanded its liberal arts curriculum, and the name was changed to InterAmerican University. The undergraduate program was reorganized into seven schools and a graduate school was then added. "

Since 1935 (!) - salute (this IS meant ironically, please!)

The flash and sound is a little much - nah, a lot too much. One interesting thing about America - you can say basically anything until you get caught........and it takes some longer to get caught than others.

    Dear Howard:

    yes, good ol' America.

You call IAU a diploma mill, OK, I might even agree on this once I have made up my mind with all those little cells that seem to get less and less every day... Life is hard...

In my previous thread, we discussed Pacific Western University Hawaii, and NO BODY called them a "diploma mill". IAU is also an American university.

That is what I meant: I do not understand the US.

Where is the difference between PWU, that a poster called "a university that might fit your needs", and IAU that you call " a diploma mill"?

Adelheid: "In my previous thread, we discussed Pacific Western University Hawaii, and NO BODY called them a "diploma mill"..."

John: Well for starters, the popular national (in the US) television program "Extra" did. Showed a view of what they identified as the "empty room" that was the Hawaii campus. Said they got a Master's degree in a week for one of their employees.

The owner of PWU told me afterwards it was a pack of lies, but he apparently neither threatened nor broght legal action against the program.

    Folks,

One interesting observation about IAU, Both numbers listed are Cell phone numbers. Their address is right in the heart of Mid-Town Manhattan,They really should have a 212 area code number.

    Peace,

    Timmy.
