    From their website:

The Board of Trustees of Thomas Edison State College has approved a resolution authorizing the college to take the steps required to secure state approval for gaining university status.

Note: I am a TESC alumnus. So, presuming their status changes would I list my degree as coming from Thomas Edison State University (formerly Thomas Edison State College), or Thomas Edison State College (now Thomas Edison State University)?

This question has come up on the board before and the consensus is that you can choose either and you wouldn't be wrong.

Unless the new name for the school is Bigstinkfart University, I'd prefer to use the new name to avoid confusion.

Notwithstanding, does anyone else agree that "Thomas Edison State University" has way too many syllables?

I don't know what their new name will be, I just coined that for purposes of illustration. Hopefully they'll pick something better and also avoid "Institute and University."

Because "Institute" and "University" are bad? We have Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, more commonly known as Virginia Tech.

On a similar note, I attended Christopher Newport University. It was previously Christopher Newport College. I never refer to it as that, because people would look at me funny. They know it as CNU, not CNC. Of course, the grads who went there prior to the change in status might say something different, but the school has definitely made a name for itself in Virginia under the University name.

    Agreed.

I graduated from International College, but after Mr. & Mrs. Hodges donated 12 million dollars to the college, the name of the college was changed to Hodges University. The university offered to issue new diplomas and new transcripts with the new name on them (for a small fee, of course).

I vote they change it to "Nikola Tesla State University".

How about The University formerly known as TESC?

Or take a page out of Touro's book and call the school "TESC University" :sgrin:

Plus maybe add a sprinkle of Ohio State pompousness and call the school THE TESC University.

What advantage will be gained by changing it? Is this simply a public perception move?

They should call it The American Inventors University. Where imagination runs wild...

Or the Thomas Edison Charter School (TECS)

I say they just forgo with a pesky new name and go with a symbol, like Prince did.

White Area is Decal University :scratchchin:

Why it gotta be a WHITE area? :suspect:

I wouldn't mind Edison State University, Garden State University or Trenton State University. Each have a nice ring and can be comfortably initialized ("I went to ESU.")

New Jersey is one of only three states that regulates the usage of "university." Thanks to an article posted on the other forum, it is known that TESC will be starting a doctoral program next year. Calling itself a university will be more in line with its mission since it already has several graduate programs.

What kind of doctoral program are they starting?

When my undergrad school changed from "College" to "University" they didn't say anything about reissuing diplomas. But then, maybe they no longer employ anyone who can decipher clay tablets? :)

It was a reference to a probably excellent school (and alma mater to Steve Levicoff) Union Institute & University. Ampersand in the legal title.

Mark gets extra points for using the word "ampersand" appropriately in a sentence.:bling:

A prescriptive gramarian would criticize his lack of article before the subject and register-inappropriate copula deletion.
