    Chapter Six: Getting Published
Some of the best advice re. academic publishing to be found in one place, covering writing, targeting journals, and working with editors. It's a chapter from a handbook on 'Becoming a Historian' put out by Canadian Universities, and is linked to the rest of the volume for reading online.

    A key recommendation:

‘Other supervisors tell their students not to get “distracted” by publishing until after the thesis is defended. We disagree with the latter advice. Publishing one or two articles while you are writing your thesis is a way of introducing yourself to the wider profession.’

I think this advice is particularly important for doctoral students in distance learning, who frequently lack the networking opportunities more readily available in residential programs.
