I wasn't sure whether to put this into the Business or the Education forum, so I am just putting it here. Please move if not appropriate. I need a bit of career advice on how to best prepare myself for a leadership training and development position in the private sector.

I originally have a background in linguistics/applied linguistics, and I have worked in various language-related fields for the last 7 or so years. A few years ago, I noticed that I tend to gravitate towards training and training development roles in the organizations I work for, so I got a M.Ed. in Adult Education and Training from Colorado State University (highly recommended by the way) to add some formal academic background to what I had learned through practice.

So far, I have always been lucky to find training-related roles within the context of linguistics companies. Those companies hired me mainly because of my linguistics background. Obviously I can't expect to be always this lucky, so I want to keep strengthening my profile in T&D. Eventually I would love one of those sweet, well paid TD director positions.

So, besides the obvious gaining more hands-on experience in the field, what other credentials would help me to get into a TD leadership position? You may have seen from my other posts on this board that I am pretty open to all kinds of academic endeavors right now. Would you, for instance, recommend I get a business certificate? A project management credential? HR credentials? An MBA? An EdD? Two EdDs? *kidding*

You have an MEd in the subject and you have experience in training-related positions at linguistics companies? In your case, I'm not sure I would get more education, I think I'd just start applying to training leadership positions now. Or are you saying that you've done this without success?

Thank you! To be honest, I haven't tried to apply into any training leadership positions yet because I feel that I need some more experience to be really qualified to do that. I just love to study (and getting certificates and diplomas for it), so I was wondering if there may be something I can do to boost my credentials. The CSU degree is pretty theory-heavy. Maybe some technology certs (not necessarily for credit) might be good. I already have a graduate certificate in educational tech from UF, but it wasn't really about using the technology - more about the theory of tech-mediated learning.

So, I guess it's either more tech or more business.
