There has been much discussion over what accreditation means in the United States.

Here is a link for definitions from the US Dept of Ed site.

    http://www.ed.gov/NLE/USNEI/us/accred-whatis.html

    It says in part:

"Both the federal and state governments recognize accreditation as the mechanism by which institutional and programmatic legitimacy and capacity are measured. In international terms, accreditation by a recognized accrediting authority is accepted as the U.S. equivalent of other countries' ministerial recognition of institutions belonging to the national education system."

It goes on to list links for recognized Regional and National Accrediting agencies.

I looked at the list of national accreditors.

    I did not see:

    NAPNSC

National Association of Private, Nontraditional Schools and Colleges

Thats the agency that accredits Cooks Institute of Electronics.

Now, granted, I did not think this program was the GREATEST engineering program in the world. I DID think it was nationally accredited (like CIE or Grantham w/ DETC).

Anybody know anything about this school or accreditor?

    Best Regards,

    Bill

  3. Do a search of the board for "Cooks NAPNSC" and you'll get the gist.

NAPNSC is not a recognized national accrediting agency. They have a rather interesting history recounted by Dr. Bear. They are always the bride's maid and never the bride. The organization made many attempts to be recognized by US DoE and none came to anything. I think they had hope at one point due to Trinity Theological Seminary being accredited by the University of Liverpool. As I understood it they felt this would give outside recognition to a school they accredited which was a requirement for the USDoE.

Dr. Bear saw them as a sincere attempt.

    North,
Good Job on the info posted on the US dept of Edu. list of Regional & National accreditation agencies. I am particularly surprised that there are more than ATS & TRACS that are recognized for accrediting Theological/ Biblical programs. I also noticed the validity of ACICS (for independent Colleges and schools). I remember seeing this particular agency on a school's website before, but I ignored it thinking it was one of those bogus crap out there.

    Peace,

    Timmy.

It is always good to get information from the horse's mouth so to speak. I found the statement about federal and state governmental recognition of accreditation as the *mechanism by which institutional and programmatic legitimacy and capacity are measured* to be interesting and the part about recognized accreditation being equivalent to ministerial recognition internationally. This is especially true in light of attempts by some to minimize recognized accreditation's meaning, worth and recognition.

    Timmy, North,

I like the gist of the conversation, but I think some will take this gentle breeze to start a firestorm.
