This is a great site that I've learned a lot from and decided to write my 1st post after being a longtime reader. I'm interested in a Phd in Education but a little unsure of which specialization to pursue. Just FYI, I'm finishing up my MA in Educational Management and have a few years experience in education as a teacher in a variety of subjects. My goal is have a Phd spec. that opens up as many doors as possible and career prospects in a non-teaching (admin, research, counseling, etc) position. The options I'm considering: Educational Psychology - I thought this was a good combo with my MA in Educational Management and opens up more opportunities. Not to mention, on a superficial note, it sounds somewhat prestigious. On the job market though I've seen mixed reviews: according to the Department of Labor there should be average-steady growth but some have said there are really no jobs in this area. Socio-Education - Many of the research topics seem interested and it looks broad enough to potentially appeal for gov. jobs, think tanks, counseling positions , etc. Haven't been able to find too much information about this specific specialization however. Inclusive Education - Similar thoughts as the socio-education option. Though this seems less broad and more focused on special ed/at risk learners which I also have experience teaching on a practical level. I would imagine there are would be some good prospects in this field but haven't seen too much concrete information. Educational Management - While this may seem like an obvious choice given my MA, I am concerned they are redundant. In other words, ideally, I want my PhD in Education to complement and enhance my career...not merely repeat what I already have a grad degree in. Still, it's worth considering I suppose. Appreciate your thoughtful feedback and look forward to learning more on this site!
