I live in Tennessee and just found out about this today. Starting in 2015 all community colleges in the state will be completely tuition-free. They will be funded by the state's lottery. Many TN community colleges offer distance courses although I suspect they will only be free to in-state students.

States keep eye on Tenn. free community college plan

This is terrific news, although the article sure does go out of its way to 'couch' the concept.

What does this last line even mean: "Some four-year institutions worry the plan will make it more difficult for them to maintain socioeconomic diversity in their student body."

The free tuition won't be available to out-of-staters, or to working adults regardless of state. The deal is only offered to Tennessee students who have just graduated from high school.

I hope this lasts, but I doubt it will. Virginia's first sales tax was created in the 60's to pay for community colleges. It doesn't anymore, and hasn't for a while. :-( On the upside, if it works, Tennessee will be a shining example for the rest of us!
