I need college algebra in order to graduate this fall from U of Oklahoma. I've taken it before and got a D... every school and Oklahoma and Texas is requiring that I take a placement exam to retake it. Does anyone know of any state/school that will allow me to take college algebra online with no prerequisite or placement testing?

Can you test out of it?

That is what I did to surpass Algebra and go straight into Statistics. Some colleges allow it, my B&M community college was one of those places, and it saved me a ton of time.

Would you be able to use ALEKS' College Algebra? ALEKS has an ACE credited College Algebra course, which is probably the best option if there is a chance that you fail the exam, since you can retake the exam as often as you like.

Excelsior College offers an online college algebra course with no proctored exams...

Following up on Penpusher's suggestion, does your university accept ACE accredited courses for credit, such as ALEKS company's College Algebra which is self paced and online? When I passed the ALEKS assessment at a 70% level, my college accepted it as a transfer course. I found the course to be really thorough but constantly explaining the examples in as many ways as you need, as many times as you need it. It is low pressure and no time limits to finish the course. You just work at your home computer, no proctors.

I have called my academic advisor and she said that she didn't know if they accepted from ACE. My university is listed on the ACe website so I'm going to try and call back next week and speak to someone else. ALEKS sounds great!

She did tell me that I needed to take it at a regionally accredited college. So far all of the suggestions have a placement test requirement. I know I just need to get a tutor and learn the test material and take the test soon... But I'm afraid I don't have enough time to pass it before fall starts.

APUS - I took it through there and can highly recommend it. Affordable, RA... no placement test... just go. The text book they use is easy to follow and even after a near 20 year absence in Math I managed to do well :)

That's look great! And it appears to be regionally accredited. I'll verify with my advisor. Thank you so much!

Want my advice? Skip the advisor. Contact the registrar at OU and send a copy of the ACE Evaluation for ALEKS:

ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training

Ask the registrar about accepting credit for ALEKS PROVIDED the credit is posted on the ACE Transcript.

Because if I read the policy right...they should:

    Noncollegiate Learning Experiences

    Good luck!

I would recommend LSU, you do not need to take any replacement test. I even took their Calculus courses without replacement test.

Even for only the training and tutoring purpose I would recommend ALEKS, which uses an Artificial Intelligence to determine what you know and what you don't know, and which will train you accordingly. Here is how it works.

When you sign up with ALEKS (1 month is $20), you get two accounts, a master and a student. The master can assign any course to his student: So, first you log in as master and assign the student the course College Algebra. The first time student logs in, he or she will have to go through an assessment of around 25 questions; this is so that ALEKS can determine what student already knows. If you get 70% or more on that assessment, you're done: Just contact ACE and get your course credited.

If you get less than 70%, there are two pathways you can go: Use ALEKS to improve your knowledge in topics you failed (or which weren't tested), i.e. use the system simply for training. Every once in a while you will get assessed again - if you pass 70% on an assessment, you're done again.

The other way is to force the issue of testing. After "failing" the first assessment, log in as master again and assign student a new course (just take your pick). The first time student logs in again, he or she will have to take an assessment in this new course: Just race through it ("I don't know"), since the result doesn't interest you. After failing this course, log in as master again and re-asssign student College Algebra. The next time student logs in, he or she will get a new assessment: If you get 70%, you're done again.

Redo the last paragraph as often as you need, if your goal is to simply pass College Algebra. All the assessments are unproctored and have no time restrictions (at least none that I'm aware of). Although the topics ALEKS teaches are really comprehensive and worth getting college credit for, I'm pretty sure that this is the cheapest and easiest way to obtain maths college credit.

So, even if you only use ALEKS for learning purposes, you might get the college credit as a side effect. Once you have that, there is probably no harm in showing the ACE transcript to your college...

  18. Least expensive Algebra that does NOT use MyMatLab

So, my school's not going to take my ALEKS Algebra, and everything they offer uses that HORRIFIC MyMatLab. I refuse to be bullied into taking that. Other than CLEPing (which I think I'm probably too slow doing Math problems to pass), what's the least expensive way to do College Algebra? As in, less than the $559 at LSU (and AMU takes the lazy way out using the MatLab).

If you plug "algebra" into our search gizmo then you'll get 5 pages of results. I'm guessing that if a better answer can't be found in there then you've already got the best answer there is. Best of luck.:sigh1:

Did you send the ACE transcript to your school? Because if you haven't, I would. Registrar's like transcripts :)

You might want to check into Clovis Community College - they're pretty cheap as well.
