I came across a diploma which had that less-than-wonderful look about it. Strategically placed between several legitimate diplomas was a Ph.D. diploma from Northwestern International University, Ltd. When I checked the website at http://www.universitydegree.com I found that the degree cost $395.

Hmmmmm, it really was a nice looking diploma!

Anytime I see a framed diploma, curiosity prompts me to check its authenticity. I blame John Bear for this acquired trait.

I did not ever think of that. I am one of those people who keeps my certificates and degrees in a file folder. Good idea.

By the way anyone who is reading I posted looking for info on Rio Salado college (teacher cert program). I looked at all the old references to it....anyone have anything new to add?
    Thanks.

Well I'm in Tempe right now, and i have looked into them. They are low priced and offer a typical community college education with a wide variety of available courses.

Just for the record all of my diplomas are framed. The same goes for the framed diplomas we see in physicians and attorneys offices.

The proper course is to check the school out as Russell did. Even if the diploma looks like its is from a legitimate school and you have a question about it you can always check with the school to see if the person actually graduated with the degree. Make sure you have the correct name, spelling, etc. as it appears on the diploma to help avoid mistakes.

I was involved in a situation when we had to validate a persons credentials from a prominent school. Copies of the diplomas were requested and the photocopies were hardly legible. The person claimed two degrees from the school. One of the names on the diploma was signed "so-and-so, Ph.D." which was a tip-off. In checking with the school we found the person attended the school but never graduated. It would seem that the individual decided to do their own graduation.

The NIU diploma was one of the most professional I have seen, which is one of the characteristics of less-than-wonderful schools. If a school charges $395 for the Ph.D., and the diploma costs $50, everybody wins: The school has made a net profit of over $300; The student has bought a professional diploma, ready to enhance the decor of their office; and, John Doe becomes Dr. John Doe.

Just pray the bomb doesn't explode--one wrong step and the land mine will go off. :(

    Northwestern University

The President of Northwestern University is a Dr Jay Wise . Is he the same guy as American University in Minn? American offers a BA for $99 and change and a PHD for $199. Is it a scam anyone have any info on it?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Re: Northwestern University

Actually, its American College of Metaphysical Theology in MN. ACMT advertises the Ph.D. in USA Today for $199. Quite a bargain, huh? :D

Incidentally, when you look at the websites of both NIU and ACMT--they are almost identical. Well, except that the ACMT Ph.D. is half the cost of its NIU counterpart.

  11. I'm curious -- where did you see this diploma? In the home of an acquaintance, office of a professional, ? (Not asking for name & address, just a general idea of the context.)

In the office of a professional, while taking a tour of the office complex. The individual had RA bachelor's and master's degrees, along with the NIU Ph.D. diploma. The person in question was not in the office at the time, so no face-to-face communication took place.

American College offers a Ph.D. for $199--for little or no work. Does this sound like a diploma mill?
