What a wonderful find! I like the form that allows you to ask for more information about the "University of Pheonix," as well as "Cheaper Car Insurance," "Free Debt Consolidation," "Free Cell Phone," and "Free Credit Report." The domain is registered to a Phil Harmon, 2100 Oceanfront, Newport, CA 92663.
No DM program? Did they drop their Doctor of Management (DM) program? I didn't notice it on their web site. If they did, good for them. They really should work with the accreditors on offering a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) and/or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). I think they'll find much more interest in these mainstream doctoral programs than the DM.
UoP Doctoral Programs They have not dropped the DM program. It does not reside as an on-line program. It is a residential program offered on a few campus locations that have the proper staff to guide the research process. I don't recall which specific sites. They do have in the works their own DBA and Ph.D programs as well. Plans are for a residential presence. They made these announcements on the Faculty Web site. Regards, Dick
David and Dick should look at the web site again. This is not University of Phoenix Online, whose web site is at http://www.uoponline.com/
Motive? What is Phil's motive for hosting a non-official UoP website? Obviously, money is somehow involved.... but how?
What is interesting is that the toll-free number apparently does belong to the real UoP, and that the imitator is simply trying to generate traffic for the various sales pitches, not sell diplomas.
Gert, This is strange. When I called the 1-800 number, I get the the Philadelphia campus of U of P. Possibly this is an old web site.
It's a brand new web site. The domain was registered 18-May-2002. I don't think it's strange that much of material points to the legitimate University of Phoenix. What a great way to introduce one's own schemes under an umbrella of apparent legitimacy. And UOP does market their programs from a variety of different domain names, so this doesn't seem unusual (except for the spelling error). Of course, one problem with this business is that the UoP lawyers are going to have a field day.
How very odd. UNIVERSITY-PHEONIX-ONLINE.INFO was registered to Phil Harmon, 2100 Oceanfront, Newport, California 92663 on May 18, 2002. The other school links are all affiliate links through Quinstreet -- and U of Phoenix is one of Quinstreet's clients (see http://members.quinstreet.com/enroll/qs/great.jsp for some listings that include UoP). My guess is that Phil Harmon is trying to make money on leads and clickthroughs and capitalize on those who misspell Phoenix in search engines. The problem, as Gert notes, is that U of P is likely to sic lawyers on him. It does make sense for schools to include likely misspellings of their names in the keyword meta tag. I developed a website for a local funeral home, and it got as many hits through searches for "creamation" as for any other word.
It is still up. The web site is now being hosted by foxmedia.. http://www.bluefoxmedia.com/lead/uop2/
