I was wondering if anyone is going through or has gone through the Capella MBA program. I know most of the people on this board are going through the PhD program. I was looking at them because they have a specialization in Finance and there aren't many DL schools out there that have an MBA program with a Finance specialization. Would love to hear your thoughts.

I completed Capella's MBA program in December with a specialization in Marketing. The program is very challenging and rewarding. Capella places a strong emphasis on course work that is appliciable to your career. For example all of my final projects were based on projects that related to my job. I found this to be a great experience because I could realize the benefits of my education immediately. The faculty are scholar practionars meaning they extensive experience in their fields.

The courses I took consisted of threaded discussions, weekly assignments and final projects. The faculty are very responsive to questions. I have been so impressed with Capella's programs that I am starting their PhD program in Organization and Management in June.

Do you have any specific questions about Capella?

Are you certain you want to go the MBA route? Have you considered an MS in Finance?

Previously, I looked at several MBA programs with a specialization in finance but the couple of dozen credits worth of management, marketing, leadership, inter alia, have marginal utility for my purposes.

    Just a thought.

I definitely want to go the MBA route. I'm a CPA and I want a position in upper management. Director, then CFO, so I definitely need the business courses. I have a BS from a very reputable university, ranked in the top 25 for business schools and I just want an MBA from a reputable school as well. It's very hard to find with my requirements of 100% DL, preferably no GMAT, and under $20k since I have to pay for the entire thing.

    Tina,
I agree that you need the MBA. My son obtained the BS in Accounting, passed the CPA, completed the MAcc and was unable to move into management because he was too structured (imagine that). He went to Vanderbilt, received the E-MBA and increased his salary about 30% immediately after graduating.
So, go for the MBA, and Good Luck.

I don't know about Capella's MBA but their PhD in Human Services in very challenging and also marketable.

Cal State U Dominguez Hills has a DL MBA program that includes finance. See http://mbaonline.csudh.edu/
I had an associate who earned this degree and thought highly of it. Cost is reasonable as I recall. Only problem is that CSUDH has a higher level of bureaucracy compared to other schools I have attended.

Unfortunately CSUDH does not have an MBA with a concentration or specialization in Finance. I've already looked at them. Does anyone know of any other good programs with Finance and/or Accounting specializations?

I know that I've come across several programs that meet this description; if you wade through the schools listed on Jonnie's Distance learning Page then you should eventually find them. One thing to consider is that many people consider AACSB accreditation to be an advantage, but AFAIK all AACSB schools will require you to at least take the GMAT, even if they don't require a particularly high score.

One program that I do recall offhand is the online MBA in Accounting from Florida Atlantic. I think that I also remember a Finance specialization in the Nova Southeastern MBA. The programs are out there, you just have to look hard for them.

I was looking at the NOVA Southeast website for another reason and noticed they offer MBAs via various delivery modes including on-line. There appears to be a finance specialization and cost is around $500 per unit. Nova uses the term EMBA to signify it is an "Electronic MBA" but this may confusion with an Executive MBA. Nova also has a good DBA program.

The Baker College MBA has a Finance concentration. I'm finishing up the CIS concentration right now and have enjoyed the program. Cost is less than $1000 per course.

    Stern,

How do you feel about Baker's 6-week sessions? Do you get abbreviated material? How is the workload?

    Thanks,
    Tina

The six week sessions are great--long enough to cover the important areas, but short enough to keep the motivation going. The workload is rough but again, the information is immediately applicable. Is the material abbreviated? That's subjective. No one will stop you from applying yourself more than is required if you deem it to be necessary for your situation.

There is a substantial paper required for each class and a minimum logon of 5 out of 7 days each week. There is very little required for entry to the program, so you will notice some fairly dim lights. But I've found there's always a few on the ball in each class to enhance the discourse.

    Regards,
    Shep
