My mother just got fired from her new job because she does not have a college dregree. She has over 200 credits from Cal State (fully accredited) but has never applied for a BA. That process will take several months but she needs a degree asap to reinstate her job. Can anyone recommend a fast-track online or other college whereby she could get apply these credits and/or any other Continuing Ed courses and life experiences towards a quick BA of any flavor? Speed is the key element here...!

    Thanks!

Any of the three assessment colleges that are mentioned here ALL THE TIME:

    Charter Oak State College

    Thomas Edison State College

    Excelsior College

All of these schools are regionally accredited. You just give them enrollment fees (and depending on college, some of misc. fees) and transfer your credits in. However, I do not think Excelsior has a BA. They do has a BS in liberal studies, however. This can be tailored to be an "arts" degree I would imagine.

As for the time it takes to enroll, transfer, and receive the diploma? I would imagine atleast a couple of months (atleast for excelsior). It took them, on average, a month to process my transfer credits. Once you have what you need to graduate then its another month (and change) for Excelsior to review your transcript and confer your degree.

The other two colleges are pretty similar as far as how the programs work. I believe that Excelsior would be the cheapest (I am not completly sure on this. It seems like COSC and TESC have alot of different fees than Excelsior).

There are MANY other schools that have very liberal transfer agreements, HOWEVER, just about all of them have some sort of residency requirement (usually 25-30 credits). These three schools have NONE (which is why they pound you with huge enrollment fees).

I hope this helps. If anybody else thinks other wise on which college is the cheapest, please let me know because there are some programs that I would prefer doing at TESC and COSC over Excelsior.

    Best Regards and good luck,

    Bill

If she's already met the requirements for a degree from Cal State then I'd suggest that she just get started with the process for getting the degree conferred from there, and have the registrar write a letter stating that she's completed the degree requirements. That ought to satisfy employment requirements, and should be both the quickest and the cheapest route.

Gary's advice sure makes sense to me. The 'letter' strategy has even worked for people just starting on a program -- saying, in effect, "[Person] has enrolled in [program], and is on a track whereby the degree will be earned on [date]." In your mother's case, since presumaly she has enough units, the process could be very simple.

But, if you don't mind my asking, what's the story here? It sounds awfully unusual to me.

    1. She gets a new job.
    2. She is, it seems, almost immediately fired from this new job because she doesn't have a degree. (Did the employer forget to ask?)
    3. But, it seems, if she can get a degree really fast, she will be rehired.

    Thanks for explaining.

Why would any employer fire a good employee ?, did she claim she had a degree or did she only state that she attended and had earned (x) amount of credits/units.

You might want to fight for lost wages, stress, loss of the quality of life you have become accustom with, you might want to talk with a labor attorney. If it's an union shop file a grievance with the local union.

Find out why she was let go (cause) ?

Get a copy of her employment application ?

If she was truthful and acted in good faith she should be able to get unemployment compensation, if you are awarded benefits it will help in any upcoming lawsuits.

Pls help me like the way JF3000's mom got from you all!

I am in the so-called situation like JF3000's mother, but I'm Thai girl, from Thailand.
    How will I do?
I had intended to finish my degree in Economics from Kasetsart Univ., Bangkok Thailand, since 1992; but, the plan was broken cause my place had been on fire---that's it!---it took me to get the job as quickly as possible.
Later, I have got the job as a production manager of the film and have done it til now.
Now, I've enough money, time, how should I do to finish my plan?
You all please give me suggestions.

First, check with your original school to see what you need to do to complete the degree. If this is favorable then follow their recommendation. If not, look into the accredited assessment institutions (links previously posted in this thread) of Excelsior, TESC, and COSC and find out how your credits will be evaluated and what you need to do to complete them.

If you go outside of these options be prepared to take a specified number of courses from the school you are interested in as this satisfies their degree course requirements. If you have additional credits to complete to earn the degree you can go with a different school depending on the number of credits required and what your budget allows. Also, Excelsior has a DistanceLearn database that can help you find courses to meet degree requirements for any school.

    Best,

    John
