    Hello all,

Thanks for this wonderful forum. I have few questions. I have a three year bachelors in mathematics from university of madras, India and I am currently exploring my online grduate degree options here in USA. I am in USA working on a H1 B visa (Work permit).

    (1) Do any universities here accept three year degrees ? so far all the universities that I have come across needs a 4 yrs bachelors and I dont want to do my bachelors again. Any information do you guys have on this ?

    (2) I am closely looking at Florida Institute of Technology for their MS in Management course. I am not sure whether they will accept me but I am gonna try. Anybody have some opinions about this university ?

I need your best wishes and expert answers for this seemingly daunting task that I am looking to finish.

    Thanks again

    My Thoughts

    Greetings,

I am of the opinion that you will be accepted in a master's program, at least provisionally. You may be asked to take a few additional courses. The best advice one could give is to start from the premise that you have an undergraduate degree. If the admissions office consider that there are deficiencies then they will tell you. Just go for it. Don't be bashful to argue about what they propose to you. It never hurts to ask for something because the worst thing that can happen is someone say no and then you can ask for their reasoning and counter with your own. Aslo, it would be good to apply to a few schools not just one. Good luck.

Have you actually contacted these US universities about your three-year degree? My understanding is the following: India uses the British model in which a 3 year BA is an "ordinary" degree, while a 4 year is an "honours" degree.

Generally an British "ordinary" degree is sufficient to enter a US graduate program although rather unusual since most who want to do so take an honours degree.

You may wish to check with individual US schools rather than relying upon what's in the catalog. Also, unfortunately, there is some justified suspicion of Indian degrees because of the great variation in their quality and the widespread corruption in the exam process. Good luck!

The course at F.I.T is in Engineering Management, 36 credit hours and 12 subjects.

They specifically state entrance requirements as being an ABET Degree (probably or equivelent), plus you will need to do the GMAT.

As Warguns commented, a 3 year degree to a 4 year?...you may have trouble, but call them at plead your case.

It may also help if you have a letter of recognition from the Institution of Engineers India, or if you are already registered as one in India or the UK.

    Good luck.

Institution of Engineers honours Engineering Graduates or AMIE.

Not all schools in India are bad .. Majority of them are really good. I can say the syllabus is comparable to some of the best schools here in USA. And students are required to go to full-time school for 3 or 4 yrs depending on the course and pass a strictly proctored exams.
Some of the best schools include IIT's (Indian Institute of Technology)and REC's(Regional Engineering College) and one should appear for a "Common Entrance Test" to get into these schools and only 3% of the total students appearing in the test will get admission.

A comparable and easy for answer rahuland120, is if he has full membership of IE, and/or is a C.Eng (UK), I could almost say that F.I.T would acccept this, since ABET already have reciprocol agreements with world engineering bodies.

In India as well as the UK up until 15 years ago when the Engineering council put out the document SATOR, all of the 3 year Engineering degree were commonplace for becoming a C.Eng (P.E). Now its 4 year degrees or Ist Class honours as a requirement.

Back to this persons problem, he did not provide his graduation date, his marks, he has'nt said if or what his Degree is, whether he is a registered Engineer or if he has other C.P.D?.

We cant given a straight opinion on whether he will get accepted to F.I.T, only general guidlines.

There is no question regarding the quality of the India Engineering programs, but the added bits above will help his case.
