Has anyone heard any credible news on DETC being authorized to accredit Doctor of Arts degrees? Anyone has an idea which schools might offer such a degree if it is the case? Any speculations on degree areas? KKA
This question was recently asked in another thread. You may want to check it out by clicking on the link at the end of this post. From my conversations with the people at DETC, there is no such plan. On another note, DETC graduate programs are already quite suspect in some circles. I am not suggesting that this is reasonable or fair. It simply says what is. Anyway, if you conduct a search using "DETC" you should see a thread that is titled "DETC and Accreditation of Doctoral Programs." Here is a quote from my post: Someone posted in a thread that there was word of DETC planning to accredit Doctor of Arts programs. I contacted DETC and here is their response: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In its most recent appearance (December 2001) before the U.S. Department of Education’s National Advisory Committee, the Commission petitioned the Department to expand the Commission’s scope of recognition to be expanded to include First Professional degree programs offered at a distance. The Committee recommended acceptance of the Commission’s petition. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This includes JD programs and the like. However, with regards to other doctoral programs, they wrote: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As of today’s date, the Commission has not scheduled a time to revisit the issue of accrediting doctorate level programs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This information was provided by Rosalind Garris from the DETC.
