Hi! I'm a current MSW-holding social worker and I am looking for some sort of related doctorate that I can complete online that is at least DETC accredited if not from a brick and mortar school. I'm looking for any counseling, psychology or social work related PhD, PsyD, DSW, edd, etc.that can allow me to legally market myself as "Dr." I already checked with my state and as long as the program is nationally accredited, this is okay.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

I'm not sure which of those fields you're honestly planning on going into; counseling, psychology, and social work are remarkably different. However I'l highly suggest you look into your state's licensing boards a bit further, it's far more difficult than any "nationally accredited program". Some state boards are very specific on what qualifies for licensing.

The field I am in is social work and I plan on getting licensed as an lcsw. Now I am just looking for a doctorate so I can market myself as so.

That's an awful lot of time and money just for a marketing angle. Are you sure it's worth it?

Great question. Obviously the cheaper the program the better but I do believe it is worth it in this field.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that masters-level clinicians (social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors) can bill more if they have doctoral degrees.

In the Practicum courses towards the Cal Southern PsyD, "Learners are responsible for finding their own outside supervised clinical experience." That might entail costs for the supervision.

These are all great options thank you guys so much. As for what was said about masters level clinicians being able to bill more for insurance if they have a doctorate without a license, I don't think that is true but I will definitely look into it. Thanks again guys.

In private practice they can bill whatever the market will bear. I'm not sure their insurance and Medicare rates change though from the addition of a doctorate.

That's standard practice in the field, at least with counseling. The costs and time involved are far from unsubstantial as well.

I absolutely applaud your interest in striving towards a doctorate. Certainly there's a marketing advantage and possibly some administration doors opened by obtaining your doctorate. With that said, you can run a very successful private practice after obtaining your post masters board licensing.

Thanks. That is definitely true but why not maximize my potential.

    Thanks for the encouraging words.

I'd check out Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. THey have a distance-based Ph.D. in social work, their social work department is highly regarded in Canada (where social work education, on the whole, is generally better than here in the US). The program, last I looked, was insanely cheap. The only catch is, one or two in-person 10 day seminars on campus are required, but even factoring in the cost of that, it's still among the best deals you'll find in a Ph.D, and I'm about 95% certain it's recognized by CSWE.

Hmm...Thanks for the reply but I can't seem to find that program.

Thanks to many of you I have come up with many different potential programs and now I was wondering if anybody can give me any detailed feedback on any of them. Here they are:

    Calsouthern psyd program

    ULM Phd family therapy

    Johns Hopkins edd

    Arizona state dbh

institute of clinical social work phd (there is some residency in this program so not the biggest fan but I want to hear about it anyways)
