Just to let you know, Solano Community College in northern California offers a music appreciation course through distance learning. I'm taking it now and I've been enjoying it. There are no required textbooks. The coursework is found on the college's website and at this location: OnMusic Appreciation

The coursework consists of five written assignments, quizzes after each lecture, a midterm, a final exam, and posts on a discussion board. You also have to attend a concert and write a report about it. The course covers the fundamentals of music, musical genres, musical instruments, and music history.

I'm taking this class for the fun of it and to fill in some gaps in my knowledge; I didn't learn much about music when I was growing up. I learned about music in elementary school, but not in junior high, high school, or the first time I went to college. I'm not working towards a degree.

I just saw it last night. How difficult is it? How extensive are the written assignments? Thanks!

It is not a difficult class. You are required to write five discussion board posts consisting of at least 200 words each in response to a question. Moreover, you have to respond to two posts that other students have made.

In addition to the discussion board posts, there are five written assignments. The first one had a requirement of two paragraphs. The second one had a length of at least 250 words. The third one has a length of two or three paragraphs. The fourth one has a length of 750 - 1000 words. The fifth one (concert report) has a length of 1200 words.

There are several quizzes; there are either multiple choice or fill-in-blank. You have to take a midterm and final.

You need some good headphones because you are going to listen to a lot of music.
