According to Whois, this website was registered just 12 days ago. None of the regulars around here commented on it, but someone who's never posted before "found" it and brought it to us. I'll buy that.

According to Whois, the url is registered to someone at the same address as is listed on the accrediting agency's list.

The choice of name must certainly be actionable by the real DETC.

I wonder if any of the listed schools--a heckuva lineup that they were able to evaluate in such a short time--even know they're "accredited" by this thing?

The address given is also the location for something called "Enexus, Inc." www.enexus.com is registered to that address, too. "DentalMart" is located there, too, along with a lot of other businesses. Sounds like a mail-forwarding, secretarial, office-rental-by-the-hour kind of place. (Like the one the WAUC uses in Las Vegas.) A search of the address on Google reveals many. But the Nevada Department of Agriculture uses this address, too?

It's new to me. Thanks for pointing it out, prsbanker.

This is one of those phonies whose approach is to accredit a lot of real schools (without their knowledge) along with the fakes.

Since the non-wonderful World Association for Universities and Colleges is also run from a convenience address in Nevada, one wonders.

Anyway, I've taken the liberty of passing the information on to the real DETC in Washington, and I suspect they are waking up their lawyers even as we speak.

www.windsoruniversity.net in the usatoday paper...just curious though.. i realized that the accrediting association they say is the leader in the us was a bogus statement and i thought this forum should know about it...

    Re: website

No, thanks for bringing it up. Perhaps it would have been helpful to fill us in on how and where you came across it (as you just did). I'm way too suspicious. I apologize. Again, thanks.

This just in: The USDETC website and the Windsor University website were registered on the same day (5-2-02). Coincidence? (Or maybe I don't understand how that stuff works; I'm certainly no expert on urls and the Web.)

  7. Could be a coincidence that Windsor and "USDETC" were registered the same day -- but it is suggestive.

By the way, the Windsor site is largely copied from another less-than-wonderful school. Keen eyes will spot the slipup where the Windsor-ites failed to edit.

I did a quick run-through and could only find a reference to "PGI." Hopefully, someone else will catch the reference, or Kristin will tell us.

Clermont College, thought to be associated with Prescott College.

The Harley Street address is that of London Center, a business services provider.

The address is for Corporate Advisory Services, Inc., a company that has incorporated thousands of Nevada corporations and acts as the agent for service of process. http://www.corpadvise.com/

As such, so far as the address, the audit trail stops here.

    Strange!

I went to the Windsor web site and there is a strong emphasis on people phoning them London, UK time and yet, the 'phone numbers given do not resemble central London numbers at all! Unless they are 800-type private numbers instead of public BT allocated numbers. I just wondered if you get patched into the USA back from the Uk or whether these are dial direct US numbers? The names of the people involved all seem to be more US than UK type names, qualifications. Just an observation. One additional point. Unless they are registered outside the Uk to operate as a university and grant degrees, under UK legislation they are breaking the law, and may only operate in the Uk as the Uk branch of the overseas activity.

  12. Yep, Gert got it. Check those page titles.

Seems rather a sloppy job of plagiarism -- the online enrollment forms are nearly identical, save for Clermont's being on a secure server and Windsor's not, and Windsor's not having space to enter a credit card (despite "I hereby authorize WU to charge the appropriate amount of my first tuition payment ( & all subsequent payments less any scholarship to the above referenced credit card or trade account" in the text just above the "I Agree" button).

Clermont: a fitting name indeed. Clearly named for Robert Fulton's first steamboat. Characterized by being full of hot air, and always in danger of blowing up.

    Re: Strange!

The telephone number appears to be a US number. As far as I can tell there is currently no UK number starting (0)866.

The Windsor website does look a lot like Clermont's. Clermont is the direct descendant of Prescott College. Both were run by Nevada corporations, one called The Prescott Group, Inc. -- the other The Clermont Group, Inc. (hence PGI and CGI). The principal behind both Prescott & Clermont was a Michigan lawyer, Steven W. Moss.
