Is there a way to find out if a school is for profit or non-for profit? I'm looking at once school specifically, and should I gather that the absence of a non-profit identifier means they are for profit? Clues? Rules?

IPEDS Data Center (in institutional listings under General Information: Institutional Characteristics)
    College Navigator
School listings on regional accreditation agency sites often include for-profit, non-profit or public status. This may also be included through state approval agency sites.

That works. I usually don't verify in the most accurate of places. LOL. I often read a school's history on Wikipedia.

Looking at Wikipedia is fine -- it's a great resource for things like this.

Here is the best one I found - Go Find Colleges
It has them listed as: Public, Private, Non-Profit by state
