    Hi All...

I am very interested in beginning a PhD program through a school in South Africa. I am open as to which one and will most likely try and apply to several. I have a BA in Philosophy, an MDiv in Theology and I took some post grad classes toward a ThM but did not finish that program. I did, however, produce about 180 pages of writing in that program (not on the same subject though).

I am interested in a PhD in the area of philosophy and religion. Would I need to obtain another masters degree before I could get into a program?

Also, I see that most programs require a year-long (or no more than a year long) period of research proposal. Does anyone know what is required for that? Do you produce a small paper on the topic along with a bibliography? Is it something different?

Has anyone on the list worked with the philosophy/religion departments at SA schools? Any tips you can offer me?

Of course I am choosing SA both because of the non-residential nature of their programs but, also, because of the cost factor. I am open to doing another masters if necessary. I looked into UNISA for that but it appears I missed the registration window. I didn't think that a fully DL school would have those but I guess I was wrong.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Good luck with your pursuit. It's probably difficult for any of us to give specific advice since there are so many departments and programs in SA that a person could study with and each one is very distinct, with it's own policies and practices. I did a doctorate in business leadership at UNISA and found it to be a thoroughly rewarding process. Best wishes to you and perhaps someone on here will have more specific insights into your areas of interest.

I would consider the South African Theological Seminary for your major. Of the 3 schools I have dealt with (UNISA, Pretoria and SATS), SATS is BY FAR the most responsive and helpful.
