What's the fastest, least expensive way to earn one (yes, one) college credit?

I've applied to a college for their late November starting class. Unfortunately, because I have a GED I need a college credit to enter. I spoke to someone on the phone and they said all I need is one credit. The college is nationally accredited so I'm assuming nationally accredited colleges would work.

What I'm not looking to do is is wait until January, enroll in a class and then have to wait until that semester is over before I am able to attend this school. I actually have been attending college for awhile now, but due to personal reasons do not have any transferable credits. Because of this I don't think I would be successful if I tried to do another semester of classes the traditional way. I picked this school because they have a rather non-traditional structure.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unless they accept FEMAs (these are free) for college credit, these are the fastest and least expensive options I can think of.

    1. An individual course at Penn Foster. Information Literacy is only $79.

    2. Straighterline. These courses are only ACE-approved for college credit. Straighterline is not a college, therefore, it's not accredited. You would have to ask the school if ACE is acceptable.

    3. Credit-by-exam: CLEP, DSST, or Uexcel ECEP. The Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP can usually be passed with no study. The Intro to Computing DSST can be passed with little study. The test and testing center fees are normally around $100 together.

I don't think you're going to get a better answer than that.

Do they let you take a course there before you are an enrolled student? Some colleges do.

Since credit totals for degree completion typically come as a multiple of three, that one little credit will be stranded- wishing it had two friends. Just a thought, in case it matters to you, if you do not have a plan for getting two credits elsewhere, you could save a bit of money by taking a three credit course- or exam as sanantone mentioned above- and having the whole course applied to your degree when you enroll.

If you check and they say they'll take it, I'm another vote for the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP test. It's the easiest six credits available.

You can complete a FEMA course in about an hour. Have the transcript sent to Frederick Community College to have it transcripted by them. I think its $75 or so. You will then have 1 credit on a school transcript that is regionally accredited.
