My wife works for Delta Airlines and I noticed in her benefits booklet today that they give their employees a discount on tuition on Cardean University's MBA program. Has anyone heard how this school is doing? Isn't their accreditation DETC only? I would appreciate any recent news anyone has.

    Thanks,

  2. I don't have any recent news. Last year, Forbes ran an article about Michael Milken and Cardean. See Master of the Knowledge Universe, and be sure to look at the "sidebar" and chart linked at the bottom. The sidebar discusses the connection with ISIM; the chart shows organization of Milken's "Knowledge Universe Empire."

Thanks, that's very interesting. I e-mailed Cardean and they say they are in the process of obtaining regional accreditation. I have actually applied to another mba program, but have been intrigued experiments like Cardean. Having big corporations push their employees toward Cardean should help them to do very well.

    Regarding Cardean

Just one point of clarification since the whole issue of applying for, being in the process of, thinking about accreditation can lead to misunderstandings. Cardean has taken the first step required by the North Central Accrediting body which is to gain approval of their board to seek accreditation from the NCA. They have notified NCA of their intent. They have not yet completed the application. They operate within the General Institutional Requirements of the NCA, and they are DETC accredited but they are not suggesting that they are even close to being regionally accredited.

For those who would wonder from where I received this information: ISIM University is a sister institution to Cardean and we currently field many of the Cardean inquiries. I helped to start ISIM.

    Re: Regarding Cardean

The above is Mary Adams. She may not remember it, but we had a delightful conversation in July of 1997 regarding ISIM and DETC accreditation. (I was doing a little legwork for John and H-W before he sold his operation, exploring the possibilities and benefits of DETC accreditation and being listed in the DANTES catalog.) Mary was brilliant, funny, and really knew her stuff. Made me want to apply for a job! :)

Hi Rich - Yes, I do remember you - I may quote you on my resume! Thanks for the nice, if not terribly objective comments.

    Best,

  7. Mary:

If Cardean obtained DETC accreditation by virtue of its association with ISIM, will ISIM be able to attain NCA accreditation by virtue of its association with Cardean (assuming Cardean receives NCA accreditation)?

I cannot let all this ISIM talk go by without comment. I did my MS through ISIM. They were among the first ever to offer a complete program, totally online. I started online with them in 1994 and completed in 1996.

I was very satisfied with the the school and program. It got me into a regionally acredited doctoral program with Capella University. Another great experience and one that will be complete in just two weeks. Two years with ISIM and three and a half years with Capella. I'm done for a while. A few short days until I can bury the ABD and insert the PhD.

Congrats! Paul. Good to seen another Capella PhD here. Hope your experience with Capella was as positive as mine.

I'll give you my thinking on your question, but first, I need to clarify the misconception about how Cardean obtained its accreditation. When UNext acquired ISIM the DETC required ISIM to undergo a change of ownership review (new Self Evaluation Report, site visit etc.). Upon completion of that visit, and approval by the commission, ISIM sescured accreditation under new owners. Note, we could have been denied accreditation also. That was in 1999. In 2000, after Cardean received its authorization to operate in IL, it underwent an independent DETC accreditation visit and was awarded accreditation. The ownership of ISIM by UNext did allow Cardean to seek accreditation sooner, but it did not eliminate any of the steps in the process Cardean or any other school has to go through to obtain accreditation.

As for your question about NCA, if ISIM's programs and location are included in the application, and reviewed (and approved) by NCA then ISIM would have NCA accreditation as part of the Cardean accreditation. If ISIM's programs are not included they would not be part of the NCA. In either case, it's a 3-5 year process so not likely to have a significant impact in the near future.

Is there any infomation if Cardean has become RA. Their MBA program seem interesting but I am concerned that it has not achieved RA statis.

Aloha - I am in Maui for the DETC conference but thought I would reply to your question. I can't speak for Cardean, but I do know that any school applying for regional accreditation CAN indicate they are engaged in the process but since it takes several years to complete the process, it is not a good idea in my opinion to start sharing that information since it can, and sometimes is, misinterpretted by others as a school trying to claim they have something that they do not. i.e. regional accreditation.

I spoke with a representative from Cardean who stated that being nationally aaccreditated was better than being regionally aaccrediated. He said the only difference was that being RA means that you get get government funding for financial aid. But he also stated that they would be RA SOON

He stressed that the program was the best because of it affiliates and also send me articles that had be written about the school.

I though (and I might be wrong) that getting an MBA from a RA school was better than from a school that had DETC accrediation (which I am assuming is what this guy is referring to as national accrediated). If I am right I could attend a number of RA school for a lot less.

Is Cardean in need of applicants?

Today I received a call from an advisor you suggest that I send my resume and application today (I do not plan on starting my MBA until 10/03) so that it will be on file. In addition, I was told that I can get a waiver for my undergraduate degree (because my last semester ends on August 31, 2003).

It seems to me that they are pushing hard for applicants. I am still not comfortable about the fact that they are not RA. Especially with the price of the program.

Im also wondering about Cardean... i just started looking at the different online MBA's and the fact that theres no application fee, no gmat required, and they do really try to get you to enroll, im a little concerned as to the "validity" of my mba once im done.

When all is said and done, overall, is a cardean mba worth obtaining? Is it giong to be a big joke if i have Cardean University mba on my resume?

Dont get me wrong I liked the demo and they seem to have their act together, i just dont want to waste the money if its for not.... anyone have any comments?

It is not a joke, but for the same price you can go for a Brick and mortar university's MBA. Most of the companies and people that I know don't have much respect for pure online universities, they feel that you are just buying the degree, I know it is not true but it is about perception. I would go for any university that has a real campus and avoid any virtual university

Cardean is new but has very good connectios to many Ivy League schools. In fact, schools like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Chicago U, and Columbia have actively contributed to the design and curriculum of their degrees.

One can expect that maybe these big schools will have no problem accepting credits from this virtual university in particular. : )

They might be DETC now, but I think they will be getting RA soon.

Still, it is very pricey and like some other poster said, maybe this school might not fit your needs.

I don't know if you are looking for prestige or not, but try Amberton U. Very cheap and flexible.
Or, try some of the Australian Universities like USQ. They are even cheaper and not hard to get in for working professionals such as yourself(of course, assuming that you have your BA and some work experience).

    Hope this helps,

I heard from an I/O professor from the University of South Florida, that academia are also investigating whether your degree was done completely online or had some residency involved. He said that online degrees are seen as strictly virtual, as opposed to those that had some regular face to face contact. I guess that they want to screen out the free-runners.

Hopefully, this stigma will change, and I believe that many schools are recognizing the rigor involved in studying through distance learning format.
