    New York University: The largest privately-owned university in the United States. Prestigious. Our own Mariah Bear earned her M.A. residentially over yonder.

    State University of New York: The largest New York public university system, with branches all over the place. SUNY is less prestigious than NYU, but still very well known.

    University of the State of New York: The degree-granting arm of the New York State Department of Education, founded in 1789; originally it hosted a little school called Columbia College, which went private sometime in the early 1800s and became the prestigious Columbia University. In 1972, the USNY began hosting a little distance learning school called Regents College, which went private in 1998 and last year became the not prestigious, but still quite adequate, Excelsior College. (Disclaimer: I graduated from the Regents College program myself in 1996.) If someone claims a degree from the University of the State of New York, s/he is almost certainly referring to Regents College.

    Apologies for the double posting; if any moderators are reading this, it's the first version I meant to send, and the second can be deleted. (Note to self: Don't use "Back" and then "Forward" after posting.)

    New York University, New York State University, and The State University of New York are three different institutions. Tom has already explained the differences in greater detail.

  5. It's not just the degree-granting arm. I was at the dentist last week, and he had his New York dentistry license on the wall. It was issued by the "University of the State of New York." This was not his degree but his license. My understanding is that NY licenses for practitioners in many professions are issued under the name of the "University of the State of New York."

    I will (regrettably) be back at the dentist again tomorrow, and shall try to examine the wording on the license again.

    I did not know this, Gert; thanks. Very glad to hear that my alma mater is also the source of New York dental licenses; it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. (Or is that the nitrous oxide?)

    Cheers,

    New York State University may just be a typo by the original poster, but being eternally suspicious, I'm wondering if this might be the name of a new degree mill, taking advantage of the multiple "New York" combinations to confuse people?

    AFAIK, the legit ones are;

    1) New York University
    2) University of the State of New York
    3) State University of New York (SUNY)
    4) City University of New York (CUNY)

    "tangeduca"...could you let us know if New York State University is indeed being used by someone?

    Tom, Thank you for your information about the 3 institutions.
    Bruce, nobody is using the New York State University's name. I just wanted to know whether there was any difference among the three. Thanks.
