    Hey everyone,

Been lurking for a while and finally decided to sign-up. A little background on myself:

    Me:
I'm 27 years old, employed by the NYPD (where I've been for the past 6 years). I currently hold the rank of sergeant.

    Education:
I'm about half-way through my MPA at John Jay College of CJ (CUNY) in Manhattan (face-to-face). I'm pursuing the "Inspector-General" track which focuses on waste elimination, oversight, program effectiveness, etc. and things of that nature. I've been very happy with the program thus far. I anticipate to complete it by end of Spring '15. (FYI- A nearly identical program is now offered completely online for anyone who may be interested John Jay College of Criminal Justice Online MPA Inspector General Program)

Upon completion, I'd like to pursue an MA/MS in traditional CJ, likely via distance. I'm very much interested in the Michigan State program. John Jay has a great one, but I'm abysmal at standardized examinations and I just don't have the time to put in the effort to study for the GRE. I also have promotional exams that need to take priority over that test. Besides, I've been a CUNY student since the day I graduated HS and it would be nice to get an outside perspective from a different institution.

    Goals:
Teaching! The idea of teaching a topic I'm passionate about is exciting. The MPA I'm doing for professional reasons, the MA/MS desire is more for personal interest/enrichment and the ability to teach later on (part-time adjunct). I'm trying to get a slot in our police academy as an academic instructor, but that wouldn't be for a few years, anyway. It would be great to get that teaching/experience, which I think would be a great supplement to a graduate degree.

I hope to attend the FBI National Academy in the next 3-5 years or so. It's essentially the pinnacle of law enforcement executive and leadership training. Most every university CJ adjunct (without a PhD) in in the metro-area have attended at some point in their career. It amounts to about 15-18 credits (choice of graduate or undergraduate) which are granted in conjunction with the University of Virginia. It's tremendously competitive to receive a nomination and invite to attend, but hey a guy can dream :sly:

If anyone has advice, tips, similar experiences...I'd love to hear them.

Anyhow, there's my rant. I come to write a few lines and you guys have my life story...hah! Hope to continue learning from this forum and all of your great posts.

    Haha! Thanks for the welcome.

FBI agent? Why would I do that? I work for a living! Okay...just a little cop humor there. That training is run by the FBI, but it's meant local/state PD bigwigs. It's completely separate from new agent training. But don't worry...I'll turn a blind eye if any of your user names pop up in an investigation!

    Welcome!

It's not uncommon for a graduate program to waive a GRE/MAT requirement for an applicant who already holds a graduate degree. Sometimes this is published policy; sometimes it might be done on a case-by-case basis. It could certainly help that your MPA specifically is impressive, and that you combined with serious professional experience. And thank you for your work!

You might look at the MS in Criminal Justice online from the University of Cincinnati, whose School of CJ is highly regarded. GetEducated.com hosts a list of distance master's in CJ and related with competitive tuitions, though it's getting dated at this writing. There's also this list of RA CJ programs by distance from our own Bruce. It's also dated, but where you hit a dead link of course can search for the current site.

    Welcome to DegreeInfo!

I travel to NY at times for freelance work, or what I consider working gettaways where I sorta take a vacation but work a day or two to cover most of my expenses. I got goosebumps when you mentioned John Jay because I've actually worked there on a few occasions!

The other week, I had quite the... hmm, experience, when I decided to sleep outside in a public seating area on a nice night instead of booking an expensive hotel room. I was joined by probably two dozen schizophrenics and decided that if I ever do it again, I'll make sure to bring earplugs :sly:

He is not going to investigate on you guys, just have his technical buddy at NSA to intercept your electronic communications. Also collecting your electronic records, or any communication mediums.
