Hello everyone... this may seem like an unusual post but I'm looking to start working on building a professional network and this could consist of both a business venture and for professional use. I like to be creative when doing things and make them simple so I have had the opportunity to get for example a phone number and I would like to get one that is easy to remember. The two choices I have would be to have a phone number that would consist of being 7 Million which means it would be XXX-X00-0000, or I could get a number such as XXX-XXX-1000, 2000, etc. I am having a hard time to determine which would in your opinion be a better option the one that is XXX-X00-0000, or the one that would be XXX-XXX-1000, 2000, 3000, etc? I would honestly like to get an assessment and views on either scenario. Which do you think is the better option, and easier to remember given the choice? Thank you very much.

XXX-X00-0000 seems more distinctive and likely easier to remember. Is your business going to be local? If the area code is unfamiliar to your target market this would obviously be a drawback.

Are you confident that you could get an X00-0000 number? There are only nine of these theoretically possible per area code!

I think that Jonathan is onto something but I might come to the opposite conclusion. If your business is going to be local then I'd think you'd want to identify locally by having a local area code and exchange. If, on the other hand, you're planning on being national/international then those factors reverse themselves and you'd want something distinctive and easy to remember for anyone, anywhere.

Need help to decide which number to go with -- please give opinion...

I'm looking to do some professional business and consulting and would like to have your opinion on what you feel would be best for the number to go with -- two choices would be XXX (Area Code omitted for security reasons) -- the number would be XXX-200-0910, or XXX-400-0002. I have asked others, but I have been given about the same reception some like the 200-0910 better and others have said that they like 400-0002. If you had a choice which one do you feel is best to go with? Perhaps you could tell me which one is best and give some reasons as to why you like one vs. the other? Thanks for your input.

    I recommend 867-5309.

    Get a secretary named Jenny.

I merged this with your previous thread on the exact same topic.

The 800-867-5309 number is still considered valuable for marketing purposes.
The rights to that number sold for $25,000,000 in 2009 (Jenny not included).

Really? I had thought that the phone company had taken the number 867-5309 out of use.

I want to thank all of you for your opinions. I was able to get a couple numbers that end in 0000. Those kind of numbers are hard to come by. I got one already and when I give them the number they always say that is a great number. I talked with two random people that I had to do business with and never said anything about what they thought about the number or their opinion and for the one number I had two of them at two different companies say right away after saying the number that it is an easy and great number. That's important to someone in a business or consulting capacity. They say that with vanity or easy to remember numbers that you will see a huge increase in response rates, etc. If you ever want to be set a part from your competitors you have to do things that are creative. Some people think that I'm crazy to worry so much about a phone number but when you get that kind of response as I have from two random people that's absolutely priceless and it shows that you like to be creative and innovative which many people seek when deciding to do business with you. If you just have a random number that no one can remember the person is going to remember the one that has an easy to remember number. Proof is numbers like 1-800-FLOWERS, which increased their business substantially. Interesting enough, people may not call your number right away but they will have it memorized in their mind and think of it when they need to call and many studies show that it may take a few days or even a few months or a year later but the number gets embedded in them. I also want to thank the moderator who consolidated the thread and they were very nice in not getting upset or disgruntled about it. That means a lot. Have any of you ever considered the value of a phone number and feel that it is important for business as well?

That's an old urban legend, debunked on snopes.com.

For example, a check of Google quickly reveals that a plumbing & heating business in Rhode Island currently uses 401-867-5309 as its main corporate number, as well as for service calls.

My brother used to be a bartender in Toledo. One of the female patrons of this bar used to give her name & number to guys as "Jenny 867-5309." The reason it seemed believable to these guys were too young to remember the Tommy Tutone song and, further, in the 419 area code (northwest Ohio) the 867 exchange gets you Toledo.

On my cell phone it is impossible to call "word" numbers. For example 2 = E on my cell whereas on my land line 2 = ABC.

In some situations a toll-free telephone number for local and non-local clients is the preferred option especially if you want a "vanity telephone number". 1-800-LAW-SUIT ;-)
