I have a BA in economics from the University of Illinois and am
currently working abroad. At this stage, I'm not prepared to leave the
working world for further studies, but would like to start taking
    courses in management/economics/finance/law/policy/technology
management possibly towards an eventual degree/certificate but most likely just to improve my academic record before eventually applying to a full-time program.

My undergraduate grades were a tad mediocre (all over the map, with a
3.0 average) so I would really like the opportunity to improve my odds
at getting accepted to a good program. Can anyone recommend respected schools and programs that fit my needs? How is the University of London External Programme regarded? What are the admissions criteria for the more respected distance learning programs?

    Many thanks,
    Amir

A bachelor's with a 3.0 GPA should certainly be sufficient; I've never heard of any school officially requiring more than that. You should have no trouble getting into London.

For U.S. schools, you may be asked to take the GRE or GMAT exams, but this isn't a particularly common requirement for distance learning master's programs.

    Good luck.

You may want to check into the South African University market, as well. The price is fantastic, though some of them have a reputation for being incredibly frustrating to enroll with (very complex requirements). Still, they would be worth a look. You can do a search for these universities on this discussion board for tons of more info.
In fact, I will probably begin my MA work on English with the University of Zululand later this year. Their web site is down, but you can email them via the studysa link below.
Use these sites as beginning points

    www.unisa.ac.za

    UZul Contact

    Hi Clint,
Perhaps I should look more closely at the sites you listed, but I just can't find an email address for admissions. I would like to know about their MA programs in English, anthropology, humanities. Do you have a contact email?
    Thanks

I assume that you can't find the email only for UNIZUL. I noticed they didn't have one listed on the studysa site. Shame on them...

Try this for an access email.

    [email protected]

This is the email for Bobby Loubser, a prof at Unizul. You should be able to be directed to the right place via him. You might make sure and mention that you cannot access the web site. Apparently, the site is up, but not able to be accessed from the outside, however not everyone there knows this. (I think).

I have found the folks at UNIZUL to be very helpful and quick to respond.

    Good luck,

You may want to consider CSU Dominguez Hills. They have an on-line MBA. From the last I heard (over a year ago- I haven't been as active as I was making the last push on my DBA) it wasn't all that expensive.

As for your GPA, many schools only look at your last 60 (semester)units to guage your acceptability into a graduate program. You may have less of a problem than you think.

    Good luck,

    Russ,

Have you completed the DBA yet? Will yours say Argosy or Univ. of Sarasota.

This is far from the first time I have seen a reference to the user-friendly nature of UNIZUL. As one who is becoming accustomed to the user-unfriendly nature of UNISA I find this intriguing. I am somewhat disturbed, however, by their current lack of web-presence. Is there any word on when their web site will be back up?

I have no idea when they will get their site back up and running. Apparently, it is up if you happen to be an employee at UNIZUL, but it isn't open to those of us on the outside. They have kept it inaccessible for some reason. They were hacked, which is why it went down in the first place. I will try to find out about when it will be open to the public.
As to your interest in their friendliness, I must comment that it is university wide, in my opinion. I have talked to folks in the English dept, the Theology dept and a few other individuals along the way. Without exception, they have been absolutely helpful and friendly. Now, I haven't gone through any paper work with them, yet. But I will. If that turns into a UNISA type nightmare, I will come here, bow down, repent publicly, and tell you all the gory details :D

You may also want to look at the British Open university. The OU Business School is the largest in Europe and has a wonderful and sequential business management programme that starts off with a certificate, goes on to a diploma and then the MBA. You can opt in and out as you choose. In addition, the course materials are probably some of the best in the world. go round the majority of British universities and you'll find the OU's materials on virtually every subject.major they offer in these libraries! The University of London MBA is also a good programme and you may also want to check out the revamped University of Reading programmes. They have a sequential programme as does the University of York (UK) Department of Management. Of course, there are many on offer in the USA as well. You'll have to decide in the end! Good luck.
