Online Associate Degree in Emergency Management

I have completed 100+ Emergency Management Institute (FEMA) Independent Study courses. I am looking for an option to obtain a associates degree in Emergency Management online that will make some use of the courses I have already taken. I am looking for an online option as I am not residing in the US currently so options like taking the onsite module exams at Frederick Community College are not available. TESC unfortunately only offers a bachelors degree in the field.

I would greatly appreciate to receive some opinions from some of the EMI credit experts on this board.

Search the site for some of this information. There a wealth of info on FEMAcourses and the schools that accepts them. That way you can track a school down.

 

Frederick Community College is the school with the official partnership with FEMA. They charge $77 per credit hour. I read something about Clackamas Community College accepting FEMAs, but that was a couple of years ago. TESC's associate's degree program that accepts a lot of FEMA is called Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies.

 

Clackamas and Red Rocks won't work as they both require additional State level EM training in their respective degrees...I can't even do them from Florida. Guam CC same deal essentially though their requirements are different.

You can however complete a AS in Emergency Management at Charter Oak State College...cheaper than TESC anyway. COSC takes the FEMA for free and you can complete the Gen Ed's via credit by exam or straighterline.

You will have to take the cornerstone course...but your still well under $2000.

 

There is no AS in Emergency Management at Charter Oak. They only offer an AS and AA in General Studies with no concentration.

 

This is technically true, I have trouble imagining anyone splitting hairs on this one if half the courses to complete are EM related. So my resume would read as follows:

Associate of Science, General Studies with Concentration in Emergency Management, Charter Oak State College

Not unlike the way I bill my BS in Organizational Leadership and Health Care from the same school. But your right, if that's important to the OP he can relocate and maybe complete a two year degree in Oregon, Colorado or Guam...but I felt he should be made aware of the COSC option.

 

Since the concentration was not granted by the college – Charter Oak has no concentrations at the associate's level as they do at the bachelor's – I would have a problem with this. It seems to me to represent something the student entirely self-declared ("Concentration in Emergency Management") as something the college sanctioned or approved.

But I'd support, enthusiastically, something like this:
Associate in Science, General Studies, Charter Oak State College
With xx semester hours in Emergency Management

If it helps you sleep at night. The claim can be backed by the transcript...you will have "concentrated" your focus on Emergency Management rather it's expressed or not.

General Studies is a bit misleading and I don't feel it captured the flavor of COSC's intent, general would be say 10 credits here, 10 there and 10 more somewhere else....which would be possible and completely acceptable...but the value in that is in how you market yourself. I don't see a moral or ethical dilemma here.

The registrar's office at COSC explained my bachelors concentration to me in this way...my transcripts even say "individualized study, even though my CPS and classes reflect the aforementioned concentrations. If an employer or other interested party wants to find my concentration they will have to do so by counting the classes.

I actually already have a bachelors and masters degree in an unrelated field so an associates in general studies wont really work out . I essentially need an Emergency Management "degree" for a new job opportunity, an online distance ed associates seems to be the quickest route through the use of FEMA credits.

However, having gone through most of the FEMA college list, it appears most require a capstone or some on site class.

Anyone here managed to get an associates in Emergency Management without having to physically set foot in a college and make use of FEMA EMI credits?
